So I went to the DMV to get my drivers license (first time) I went with my GC that expires on April first, and my one year letter extension. The guy didn't even look at my letter, no one would at that DMV! He just said no we don't accept those letters! Without even looking at it. I tried to explain that I'm here legally and won't get my new green card for months! I've a baby that has doctors appointments and so on. Called the USCIS they said that letter should have been accepted by the DMV.

Now I'm in a limbo, don't know what to do? We've been calling the Secretary of State office of Illinois and they've been giving me the run around.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You take quite a long time to get your first US driver license. And if your GC is about to expire it doesn't make any sense to do it without the extension. I had a "similar" issue when I got my driver license cause I did with my work permit. I went to the DMV closest to my home and they didn't look at it. I was so pissed! So I went to Florida highways and ...website and I printed what kind of documentation they allow to be present it as a proof of residence, and I also went to another DMV...and no problems. They issues my DL the same day. I don't have my GC yet (waiting for it) so my DL expires the same day that my work permit expires (sep 2013), but once I've my GC I can go and change it. You try to find a print info when it states that you can get your DL with your extension or try to go to a different DMV. The thing is...the extension letter states that you have your permanent green card grant it????? It says when your permanent green card expires or any info about it?

My wife extended her DL wiht the ROC letter in AZ. Look at the requirements at DMV take a copy of their list, take your evidence go to a different office. I would and have always suggested to get this stuff done early in the process, unfortunately delays at any state weather getting a SSC etc. causes problems. Get a I551 stamp in your passport and go back. see http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_x173.pdf. If you have a Social, your GC with extension letter, passport with I551 stamp which is the same as a green card - first try a different office, then ask for a supervisor.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

Any one else with similar situation? I didn't apply sooner because we lived within the city of Chicago with public transit and had no car.

I am in WI, I called first and made sure the extension letter was okay. The officer told me if the clerk at the counter says no then just mention her name, it should be okay. It appears that we don't have to mention her name, everyone in the counter follows the rule. Just that I don't get the "real id" driver license, and it will expire if the gc being rejected though the prints on driver license say 8 years... Once you receive your gc, you may use it to request replacement for free.

I'm in Chicago too. Not in the same situation but I also waited almost a year after getting my conditional GC to get driver's license. Do you have a state ID? Because when I went to apply for DL I only showed that (and gave them my social security number) and I didn't need to show anything else. I went to DMV that's next to the 290 Ike expressway by Cicero. You could try again with print outs as people mentioned but getting the I-551 stamp may be you're best bet. Good luck!
