The story IS a little odd.

How so, just the extreme unnecessary act of shooting a baby?

I agree is rather unusual without some jealousy or extreme rage involved (an ex pissed off ....situation).

But come on put 2+2 together, no sane person would fabricate such a cover-up for something..... in such a public, place, so easily disproved.

If the incident was claimed to have happened at home, a home invasion type thing, now that would be more typical of a coverup of another crime.

October 24, 2012 3:05 am • | Becoming a member of the Bloods is no joking matter. To join, aspiring gang members must complete an assigned initiation ritual — usually in the form of a criminal act.

And for Drequan Thomas, 17, that meant robbing and jumping Auburn residents.

In Cayuga County Court Tuesday morning, Chief Assistant District Attorney Chris Valdina said local law enforcement officers believe Thomas traveled from Syracuse to Auburn on Oct. 1 with his 15-year-old cousin as part of a hazing ritual into the Bloods.

"We believe he was primarily here to attack citizens," Valdina said.

In the early hours of morning, Thomas attacked two randomly chosen victims walking on two different city streets, seriously injuring both in an attempt to incapacitate and rob the men.

But instead of taking his chances at trial and facing a possible sentence of up to 50 years in prison, the Syracuse teenager decided to admit his guilt in exchange for a promised sentence of eight years behind bars and five years of post-release supervision.

"Mr. Thomas and myself are aware of the gravity of this case," Rome Canzano, Thomas' defense attorney, said.

Blotting tears from his eyes, Thomas, of 4216 S. State St., admitted he and his cousin ran up to a man on West Genesee Street, knocked him to the ground and "kicked the man repeatedly in the face." Although his cousin searched the man, Valdina said the pair found nothing valuable to steal.

Valdina said the first victim suffered a broken hip, bruised face and hemorrhaging that colored the whites of his eyes completely red.

After the first attack, Thomas said he and his cousin found and attacked another man near Owasco Street, stealing the victim's iPhone.

"I ran up on him and I knocked him down and I stomped him up," Thomas said, admitting he repeatedly kicked the man in the face while wearing boots.

Valdina said the second victim was so injured that surgeons had to reconstruct his face with metal plates and screws.

The Auburn Police Department arrested Thomas and his cousin soon after the assaults.

In exchange for a promised sentence, Thomas pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, second-degree robbery, second-degree attempted robbery and second-degree assault, all felonies. Thomas agreed not to be adjudicated as a youthful offender, and agreed to pay an undetermined amount of restitution to his victims.

Although Valdina said the district attorney's office believed Thomas' actions warranted more than eight years in prison, Valdina said they were willing to allow Thomas to plead to four charges in satisfaction of his original nine-count-long indictment because the defendant decided to admit his guilt at the time of his arraignment.

"We have an immediate acceptance of responsibility," he said. "It represents finality
