Obama, speaking from Air Force One ? Or written before he took off from Israel ?

U.S. President Barack Obama releases statement welcoming the phone conversation and stressing the 'great importance' of the restoration of the ties between Israel and Turkey.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday for the first time since the former assumed office in 2009.

Yep.

The conversation was made after efforts by U.S. President Barack Obama to mediate between Israel and Turkey, and took place during Obama's meeting with Netanyahu on Friday afternoon.

It is as yet unclear what the two leaders discussed.

Obama asked Netanyahu during their meeting to take steps towards mending the rift with Turkey. A White House official, who asked to remain unnamed, said that Obama raised the issue and stated that the U.S. wants to maintain strong relations both with Israel and Turkey.

The U.S. president released an official statement on Friday afternoon stating that he welcomes the phonecall, which was made shortly before he departed Israel for Jordan after two-day visit.

Obama dials, hands the phone to Bibi.

Erdogan: Yo.

Bibi: Hi, it's Bibi.

Erdogan: Whoa.

Bibi: Yeah.

Erdogan: Long time.

Bibi: Yeah.

Erdogan: Barack making you do this?

Bibi: Yeah.

Erdogan: Cool. I'll put a statement out that we're friends now. Maybe start with a Tweet.

Bibi: <sigh>

Erdogan: You can at least pretend you want to talk to me!

Bibi: Yeah, I could.

Erdogan hangs up.

More like

Obama: I need you to mend fences with Turkey. They're an important NATO ally, and we'll need their cooperation for our upcoming operation. As a special incentive, we're willing to provide Israel with an extra $3 billion as a special gift from the American taxpayer, PLUS we'll officially designate Israel as an "extra-super-duper major strategic ally" which means we can never ever ever cut the aid we send every year, no matter how broke our government is.

Bibi: This is an outrage ! Why should Israel talk to those dirty Turks !

Obama: Well, uh...

Bibi: You idiot ! Don't you realize we need more Iron Dome batteries to knock those '73 Peugeot mufflers the savages in Gaza keep lobbing out of their cage ?!

Obama: Well, uh...

Bibi: I can't believe you're so stupid. How can we convince the Israeli public that a strike on Iran won't have any effect at all on them without more Iron Dome ?

Obama: Well, uh...

Bibi: OK double the offer and we'll call it even.

Obama (to aid): Bring in the suitcases with the cash.

Bibi: Hurry up I'm a busy man.

I sense some bitterness at the fact that America is allied with Israel and not with the Palestinians.

Say, who are the Palestinian allies? Who sends them weapons?

No one?

Forever alone :(

You seem bitter yourself today. Everything ok at home ?

As I already said, justice and Mother Nature will ultimately take their course, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. It's true that the US will likely be the last nation in the world to finally stop supporting Israeli apartheid, just as it was the last to stop supporting South African apartheid. But Zionism will eventually end up on the rubbish heap of history along with Nazism and other corrupt, racist, failed ideologies.

BTW it's the US that sends the PA weapons. (However, they're only to be used on Palestinians.)

Haaretz and other sources now reporting that Netanyahu apologized to Erdogan for the deaths of 9 Turkish citizens aboard the Mavi Marmara, something Israel has refused to do for the last 3 years.

The following is from a White House press pool report-- written by a reporter, circulated by the White House-- from Israel today.

Two senior admin officials came back to address the issue of the phone call between [israeli PM Benjamin] Netanyahu and [Turkish PM Recep] Erdogan. Transcript is forthcoming, here are highlights:
Netanyahu apologized for the Mavi Marmara flotilla incident and acknowledged "operational mistakes," said one official
. Erdogan accepted the apology, according to this official. The other sao [senior administration official] called this a "first step" toward normalization of relations between the two countries. They said this had been the subject of talks between Obama and Netanyahu in Jerusalem this week.
The call took place in the trailer at the aiport just before Obama took off. The leaders talked for about 30 minutes. At some point, Obama got on the phone.

The Jerusalem Post is reporting that Netanyahu offered compensation.

Netanyahu voiced regret for the loss of life in the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, apologizing for any mistakes that led to loss of life. Breaking a three-year deadlock, the two agreed to normalize relations.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed an apology to the Turkish people for any error that may have led to the loss of life, and agreed to complete the agreement for compensation," the statement said.

...

Turkey, for its part, agreed to drop all charges against a group of former Israeli military commanders including former chief of staff Lt.-Gen. (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi.

Israel apologises to Turkey over flotilla deaths

JERUSALEM: Israel’s leader has announced the restoration of normal diplomatic relations with Turkey after apologising for the deaths of nine Turkish activists in a 2009 Israeli naval raid on a Gaza-bound international flotilla.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that he had expressed regret during a phone call with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

President Barack Obama helped arrange the call shortly before leaving Israel.

Maybe it was some phone call complaining about Islamists in the north and the bomb manufacturing there?

The ice has been melting for some time. About 1 month ago (with little notice in the press here) Israel suddenly agreed to deliver on $25 million in electronics gear for AWACS aircraft being built in Turkey - Israel had delayed on this for the past 3 years.

So they're all (US-Israel-Turkey) up to something for sure.

Yeah, but that's not what I was writing about. Different thing. No Islamists needed for that joint-venture, whatsoever.

Actually, i think is a good thing the 3 of them are moving forward with the manufacturing process - it's a good thing, for all concerned..

This has everything to do with Syria. With The Israeli apology, Turkey gets its AWACS capability and will beige amenable to a military intervention into Syria fro Turkish soil. Turkey comes out well on all 3 counts.
