Stupid Passport...

It looks like, out of all the things, the one that might delay this whole immigration process the most is my own passport. I didn't know until I started the NVC process that to enter the US, your passport needs to have at LEAST 6 months before it expires ( Mine expires in July )

Needless to say, once I found out I started looking online for what was necessary to renew it. Lo and behold, I need to change ALL my other Brazilian documents before I even request for the passport ( Because I need to change it to my married name ).

:: sighs ::

I got everything done. Changed all the documents and requested for a new passport, payed the GRU ( Passport fee ) and now I'm just here waiting for April 17th to arrive ( The day I go for my passport appointment ).

Im curious though. I was able to get my police certificate from the Federal Police here, and it has my old passport number. Will I have to get a new police certificate with the new passport number?

I'm just loving these little hurdles life puts my way!

Keep smilin people, its all we can do for now :-)

I'm not sure how this works in Brazil, but in Ecuador the first passport number you enter into the system is the one that you use from there on out, even if you change it. I changed my passport two years ago, but even now when I get a police clearance certificate or when I had to renew my Ecuadorian visa, they still put my old passport number. I asked why, and the guy said it was because that was the number associated with my name. If the police certificate is easy to get, I'd go renew it just in case - but if it's going to set back your case, I might call and ask first to make sure it's absolutely necessary.

Take both passports to your interview. You can get another certificate from Policia Federal online. I'm from São Paulo and the consulate has no issue with the online version.

Email the consulate asking if you can use the Policia Federal certificate online version and if yes, you need it notorized. Some states are allowed some are not.

Good luck!

I will wait till I get my new passport to get another certificate online. I didnt know I had to get it notarized... is that the protocol in Rio as well?

I will do it anyways, just out of precaution. Better safe than sorry right? ;-)

I didn't need mine notarized. But it's change from one state to another. If you are from São Paulo, you don't need it notarized.

Email the consulate and ask about it. Don't forget, it's important that you have both passport with you, they may ask for, we never know...
