Good day to all of you, guys! Haven't been here in a while so hope to find you all well! Not sure if this has been asked before. Sorry, if it has and in that case, please, point me in the right direction. My question is: where do you guys work here in the US? If I want to have a decent job what is your advice? Do I just go ahead and use my Ukrainian degree and try to get a job here? Do I go back to school and get my MD here in the US? Meanwhile I stay at home with my baby and try to find something from home but is it even possible? I have been trying to find some translating jobs or something I could do online but no luck so far. Is there someone who does things like that and doesn't mind sharing? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!

Only part I can help with is the degree / going back to school.

You will need to have your degree translated by a company like WES.org to use it to get a job. To go back to school the same thing, your college transcripts and degree need to be translated to the US equivalent to be able to apply to school here. Some places only use certain companies for the translations so you will need to check the schools websites for who they accept. Most seem to accept wes.org World Education Services. I'm having to go through this right now for my transcripts to apply to college.

Thank you for your reply! Good luck! My Diploma is already translated and evaluated by ECE, and I was excepted and stared my MD Program, just am taking a break due to current financial situation. And am over thinking everything. I was hoping to hear from Russian - Ukrainian speaking population of vj especially if possible. Although, other responses are also greatly appreciated.

Only part I can help with is the degree / going back to school.

You will need to have your degree translated by a company like WES.org to use it to get a job.

Well, your degree will definitely have to be translated/evaluated to go back to school, but there's no across-the-board requirement to translate your degree in order to get a job. I can imagine more technical jobs like doctors/mechanics/programmers requiring foreign degree evaluations, but my wife (Russian) got a social sciences/liberal arts type job without translating her degree. She just wrote in her resume, in English: [degree type], [university name], [university location], etc.

As for finding jobs I think this again will depend on the type of job but maybe also age, career level, and location. My wife and I were twenty-somethings when we came to the States and we came at the height of the "crisis," so it took what felt like forever (actually, 5 months for me and 8 months for her) to find "good," "regular" jobs. Our first gig (found after 2 months in the States) was in fact retail - a little humbling given we both had college degrees - but it was a blessing since at that time even blue-collar / retail jobs were saying "call back in six months." Her first job was part-time tutoring Russian at a University. Her current full-time gig started as a volunteer position in an office that turned salaried (I was trying to tell her she was wasting her time), so you never know how God will bless you in the end :)

Essentially, the fact that our immigration system is more generous should make it easier document-wise for you to find work here than it would be for your spouse finding work there. I'd start looking for internships, then maybe try temp work, then try language-related work (especially around colleges/universities), then as a last resort there's always retail (find a store you like yourself so you'll enjoy the employee-discount perk!)

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck in this putrid tepid economy of ours

No idea about doctors, but I did find a Russian doctor here, got his degree at Moscow State University, did his internship at a hospital here. I'd guess you would have to do an internship here as well.

My wife is a nurse, we looked, and you have to take a clex test and toefl. You could try medical translation for work.
