Feel that the USCIS goes way overboard on this issue, even in the civics test, state the most single important part of becoming a US citizen is the right to vote! Wife took this very seriously, first was a local election, 95% of the candidates ran unopposed. Second was a presidential primary, but before we even got a chance to vote, the two candidates were already chosen.

Her only question was, why am I wasting my time to vote? Then our major elections are held on a Tuesday in November where we can have a major snowstorm and during a work day. Her employer won't even give her a couple of hours off to vote, either has to suffer a lower paycheck or to use her vacation time to vote. In her home country, voting day was a national holiday, so you could have the time to vote.

This great country of ours is ran by hypocrites and why do we put up with this nonsense? And why does the USCIS make a big deal out of this, in particular where states are very lax on this subject. Every state has different procedures on voting registration. The only time in my life I felt that I was living in one country was when I was in the military. Before all this global economy ####### forced on us by our government in my corporate days, the states were in major competition for us building a new plant, but that is still going on with what little business we have left.

Hopefully, this is just an unintentional accident. Never even heard of the USCIS before I met my wife, but sure hit the books on this subject, and was with my girls every step of the way. First big issue was, 55 means 55. Loaded with DMS cops with nothing else to do but to issue traffic tickets.

USCIS only implement the law, they do not (and cannot) create it.

Congress acted with regards to the non-availibility of a waiver for a false claim of US citizenship, so it is they who are ultimately responsible for the fallout from that.

Jawaree are you saying that if they called u for jury duty, it's most likely bc u registered to vote? My husband was called once for jury duty and we had to bring the supreme court proof of his immigrant status and he went showed his EAD card and that's it.

My hubby was not registered to vote. We knew about not registering until you were a citizen but oddly he was called for Jury Duty. I thought it was bizarre, bc I was sure they got the jury pool from the voter registration. But he called and wrote back (with a copy of his green card) that he was not a citizen and could serve on a Jury.

It is a myth that jury duty is culled from voter registration.

The one time I got called for jury duty, I knew they had gotten my name from a clothing catalog mailing list I was on, because my name was spelled the same wrong way on both the catalog and the jury notice...

To the above post, I answered that question already.

What you should do is call your county's voter registrar office and have them remove your name from the voters list telling them you had registered by mistake. Maybe they can send you a letter stating you are off the list now. Second consult an immigration lawyer. This is a BIG mistake that can definitely delay if not deny your application because the USCIS will see this as a false claim to citizenship. Here is the story you were talking about http://www.change.or...ung-mother-wife Please keep us posted on what happens. This can definitely help others who are in the same situation.

:thumbs:Agree with contact and request removal with verification, see an immigration attorney.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

They get the jury lists from multiple sources, not just registered voters. Any time you give the county or state your name and address, you can get added to the potential juror pool.

If it was that easy to avoid Jury duty, begs the question how many registered voters there would be.

Yes, unfortunately some uneducated people won't vote for that reason, which only causes harm to and further disenfranchises the segment of the population that believes this rumor.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm curius....How does someone "accidentally register to vote"?

The Motor-Voter bill.

No, you are not the only one, I was wondering that myself!

Many states are pushing voter registration through the local DMV. One of my good friends registered this way before she received her citizenship. The good news is that there is hope, my friend was finally given citizenship. The bad news is that it will be a lengthy and very expensive legal battle which you might loose. My friend is married to a citizen and has two children who are citizens from birth, yet the USCIS was ready to permanently deport her. If I remember correctly she did actually vote. In the case of my friend, the DMV worker pushed her to register and said there would be now issues, so that was a factor in her favor in this particular case.

I would suggest that you get good legal advice quickly.

Incorrect. "Proof of lawful status" is required.Texas pushes voter registration rather hard, but the DMV offices seem to be pretty good at NOT offering registration to non-citizens.

Depends on what office you land and in what county....And yes, they have become much more sticklers at the DMVs in the past 2-3 years as far as following procedure to the letter as well as checking documentation; but TX is not one of those states that still has the citizenship by default in the forms.

So here is my 2 cents. All these forms should say in big bold letters do not sign this if not a US-Citizen you could be deported. My parents came to this country from Cuba spoke no English thank god they never signed anything and the I-9 form was not around till 86 I think. By that time they had started a business so never had to deal with it. In the 90's they became citizens. Who knows how many forms they may have filled out wrong.

OK so for sake of conversation what happens to a LPR who of course is legally allowed to work in the US if he marked wrong box on I-9 form? I mean after he has a green card. Just checked off wrong box. I'm not talking about jobs that requires the person to be a USC. This is why I say these forms I think are made to trip people.

I had contact with a lady for whom I assisted in an N-400 application. Shortly after becoming a Green Card holder, she was called in for jury duty, attended, showed the clerk her Green Card and informed her that she's not a US citizen, and the dumb-as-sh*t court clerk informed her that she was required to serve as a juror anyway. She did. I advised her to forget about naturalization for the rest of her natural life and instead embrace the fact that she could reside in the US as a permanent resident forever.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

In our town, city clerk, judges, and clerks of court are all elected officials, only requirement I know of to get those positions is to promise to lower taxes. Could at least make them take an IQ test, anything above a two is failing. A real critical test would be if they could give the proper change for a dollar.
