Hi all

I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how long it took to get a social security card after the interview (assuming we get approved!). We have our interview on Monday and was curious how long the process afterwards is till my husband can get all his documents and can work!!!!

Would love to hear your experiences :D

Thanks,

Courtney

Which forms did you and your husband file?

Does he have his EAD card already?

Your profile says you filed for an IR-1 / CR-1 but you have posted in the AoS forum.

What did you file, when did you file it, and what was this "interview"?

It would really help if you could provide an overview of your case and what you filed for. Your profile states "Filed for: IR-1/CR-1 Visa" yet you are posting in the Adjustment of Status forum, which is a contradiction. I am going to assume:

* Your husband was already in the US when you filed, and has remained here since

* You filed a concurrent immediate relative (spouse) petition and adjustment of status application, forms I-130 and I-485, with supporting documents

* You did not file I-765 and I-131 for temporary work and travel permits (EAD/AP), or you did file those but they haven't been processed yet.

* This appointment for Monday is an actual interview and not merely a biometrics appointment

If that's the case, then assuming the interview goes well, one of two things will happen:

* His adjustment of status be approved on the spot

* A supervisor's approval will be needed, after which he'll be approved within approximately 1 week.

In either case, 7~10 days after the approval, he will receive his permanent resident card, also known as "form I-551" or "a green card". He will not automatically be granted a social security number. He has to take the physical green card to a local social security office to apply for a social security number. The social security card itself will typically arrive in the mail 10 days after that, but he can go back to the SS office just 2 or 3 days after application and ask for them to give him his social security number. With that number and the green card he can start working. Also with that number and the green card, he can go to your state DMV and apply for a driver's license.

Since you didn't file for an EAD (using an I-765) then he will not be able to work until he receives his green card in the mail.

Once his green card is received you will need to go to the nearest Social Security Administration office and apply for a social security number (if he doesn't have one already).

Yes, to everything you just said! Thanks! That is exactly where we are right now. Monday is our actual interview. His biometrics and medical have been approved already. Let's hope we get approved and it moves as quickly as you said. Thanks for the help!
