How can they go about doing that, though?

Most likely, will mimic everything done for 'acid attacks' and the new legislation about it.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Agreed !

And if the price was lowered for the season, or two seasons,

then there is a high probability that attacks would diminish (not altogether cease)

as

those fellas seeking an hour or so of bliss could now afford it.

Different decision tree, for them, aye?

How can they go about doing that, though?

Some women are already taking a stand but its not enough. There has to be more support and demand for women's rights than is currently happening. Until then, it will never get the attention it so desperately deserves. The problem is that Indians hold tight to their culture like it is their child. Many traditions and customs specify a place for women. When anyone challenges those customs, they are seen as a threat to culture and traditions and they are vehemently opposed. Stick in the mud politicians have referred to these as "opposition to family values".

For instance, there is a festival in India called Karva Chauth. In observance of this festival, a married woman is supposed to fast the entire day for her husband's long life. There is no equivalent festival for men to pray for their wives long lives. Just to make a statement, my husband, during Karva Chauth last year, fasted instead, in plain view of his family, friends, and co-workers. At work he was mocked, ridiculed and questioned. He simply replied why is it wrong to wish my wife a long life.

When a woman becomes pregnant in India, it is illegal for a doctor to reveal the sex of the fetus. This is because female infanticide is still a large issue. You will always find some corrupt doctor looking to make a few extra bucks by revealing the sex, then if it is a girl, offer to abort the fetus. Girls are still viewed as "less valuable" than boys largely because of the dowry system. Even though dowry is illegal, many families still practice it.

Marriage in many families is still largely attached to tradition. Many families still prefer a traditional arranged marriage for their son or daughter. If a girl is "too educated" it may be difficult to find a husband for her since most men will be opposed to marrying a woman more educated than them. Education itself is oftentimes "wasted" on women as it is common for them never to work again after having children and their lives will become that of a housewife.

So the bottom line is, in a country like India where culture and traditions are so hardwired into people from the time that they are born, where it permeates every facade of their lives, it can be difficult to introduce a concept like equality for women. This is because many will view it as a threat to society which they believe is working and has worked for so many years. Many women are too timid or fearful to voice their opinions, even if they long for women's rights because they are afraid they will become an outcast. It can be very difficult to be an outcast in Indian society where your own family can disown you simply for being a nonconformist.

I am the petitioner.
