Rand Paul endorses immigrant path to citizenship

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Rand Paul said Tuesday that illegal immigrants should be allowed to become U.S. taxpayers and ultimately get a shot at citizenship, a significant step for the Tea Party favorite amid growing Republican acceptance of the idea.

"Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport" the millions already here, the potential 2016 presidential candidate told the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "Prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into becoming and being taxpaying members of society."

In year two of his plan, illegal immigrants would begin to be issued temporary work visas, and would have to wait for an unspecified period of time in a probationary legal status before getting green cards. A bipartisan panel would determine the number of visas per year. High-tech visas would be expanded and a special visa for entrepreneurs would be issued. Illegal immigrants would not be able to get on a citizenship path ahead of anyone attempting the process legally.

Different from other approaches, Paul would not attempt to crack down on employers by expanding working verification systems, something he says is tantamount to "making every business owner a policeman"

"My plan will not grant amnesty or move anyone to the front of the line," Paul said. "But what we have now is de facto amnesty."

i agree with rand on the amnesty bit - but without holding businesses accountable - he's lost me.

Lost me too.

That's his way of appeasing everyone. Illegals get to stay, yay Dems, and business owners can hire nice cheap labor without consequence, yay Repubs. I guess the Republicans are going from the party of no, to the party of anything goes.

Cool. Paradigm Shift. Lets see if the voting base shifts, as a result.

Since his audience was the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce - they'll be telling their folks all about it.

Chances are he will be branded as a RINO and disavowed. The GOP has a reputation of eating their own.

It is. As long as there is money to be made - papers or not - people will migrate to this country illegally. It's why they come. Take that incentive away and the stream of illegal migrants will slow down - probably not realistic to think it'll stop. Forget the fence down south. Just make it impossible to find a job. That's the best fence you can have.

I doubt any politician will ever hold business' such as Tyson foods, Columbia Farms, VF Jeanswear, ect. accountable and IMHO, corporate business is responsible for the mess that the US is in right now regarding illegal immigrants. The politicians will not want to rock the boat regarding the political money that they shell out. I think this is #######..

One last thought. It says NOTHING about if the illegal immigrants are going to be charged for their applications, processing, or their so called "path towards citizenship". I spent a lot of money to get my wife a green card, and I'm still spending. I wont vote for anyone that is going to "give it away". Don't pay taxes, get free medical, no need to pay into social security like every hard working American has.. I'm one working American that is tired of taking it in the shorts.. The illegal immigrants are already a drain on our economy, and they need to pay their fair share if there is going to be a "path forward to citizenship" for them.

I'm assuming they'll have to pay the fees like everyone else. The DACA fee is $465.

To be more precise, the article is wrong, he never used the word "citizen" ... mostly talked about reregistering them and letting them stay and work.

Which in the long-run amounts to Amnesty, it's just the Lefts way of doing things.

-------------

I don't really get why the move by anyone on the right to legalize these folks, they vote twice as often for the party of Big Gov't.

Serious question; Can anyone name areas which are dominated by hispanics and that Vote for the GOP?

The only one I know Cubans in miami, but as usual the kids are going for the party of free-bees.
