We're going we're going through the K1 process and have now got the stage that while we're sitting here waiting for an interview date we're starting to focus on what needs to be done once I enter the US. So with that in mind I wanted to ask what the procedure is to get a SSN number for both my self and my daughter. I will need to open a bank account asap to be able to transfer my house sale money over and I believe I can't open one until I have SSN. Can we apply for SSN before we marry or do we have to wait until we're married and how long does it take roughly?

Check out the SSN Guide on this site. I've provided you with the link below but you might want go to the guide area and read up on what you have to do after marrying for the AOS too.

You normally have to wait 2-3 weeks after you get into America, for your paperwork (from immigration at the airport) to be processed into the system.

I did it before I was married and it took about 5 days for the card to come in the mail. I then applied for AOS for me and my son.

I then went back a few weeks later to change my name and the woman said I could only do this when my new name was in the system, she also said she could not do a SSN for my son, until his work card (EAD) came.

So I went back again in January with my sons work card (he's 5 years old!), got his SSN number and handed my paperwork in to change my name (I'm still waiting for my new card)

Alot of banks charge you to have a current account, I went with a local one, that didn't charge, but later found out they don't do international transfers. So check before joining a bank.

Hope this helps.

Yes, do read the VJ guide. I would apply in the name exactly as written on your I-94 card and don't even mention marriage. SS offices vary in their experience with K1s. People have been told so many false things, but the problems more often come with marriage and name changes. Fix your name later. Ask for a supervisor if there is any hassle about eligibility. The number will be the same and counts more than the name on the card. In general, you don't need to show your card except maybe to the driver license people. Most forms or applications just ask for your SSN, but don't have to see the card.

Banks-- Go in person rather than trying to open an account online. Ask for free checking deals. If a bank says no because you're a foreigner, ask them where the next closest bank is because you have $xxx, xxx.xx you want to deposit.

i would suggest to apply in your maiden name. I applied in my married name and it took them 10 weeks to deny me because they couldnt find me in the system under my married name. you can always change it to your married name at a later date.
