Hello VJ family, My fiancee will have her interview in Guangzhou soon. She speaks and understands some English but not much. What language does the Guangzhou Consulate Officer use in the interview? Will my fincee be allowed to speak Mandarin or is she expected to understand and speak English? I have heard stories about fiancees who cannot speak English will not be given a K-1 visa. Is this true ? Also, what are the typical interview questions asked at the Guangzhou Consulate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please help us and share your interview knowledge and experience. We'd really like to hear about your interview experience. Thank you all..........

My wife as financee did hers in English, i think the kicker in the deal was she knew basically everything and especially where we were getting married depending on the visa being issued. Pick a site and use it, find a couple of prior users who did the process who can provide solid and valid advice. Be sure to do your own research, both of you have duplicates of everything and know the process. Good Luck.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

What language does the Guangzhou Consulate Officer use in the interview?

the only languages i had encountered are mandarin, cantonese, and taishanese.

Will my fincee be allowed to speak Mandarin or is she expected to understand and speak English?

if you are a caucasian, then your wife is expected to communicate in english. if you are chinese, it is okay to communicate completely in chinese.

I have heard stories about fiancees who cannot speak English will not be given a K-1 visa. Is this true ?

yes. they believe the relationship wouldnt last long because a huge language barrier in the relationship. fiance status is less commitment than marriage status.

Also, what are the typical interview questions asked at the Guangzhou Consulate.

you can read more about the questions and experience here.

Theres really is no one size fits all.

I had gone to ACH (which does not exist anymore) the day before my fiancées interview and was told by the VO that we will not have any problems the next day.

My fiancées interview was short, about 3/4 simple questions and it was conducted in Chinese without she asking for it. Only the last question was in English.

I have no proof of this but from my experience it looks like if they have decided on your case before the interview to approve you then the interview is just a mere formality.

If there is some doubt in their mind about your case then the interview becomes very critical and then the English vs Chinese comes into play.

My wife studied the basic interview questions from VJ and from her QQ group. At her interview, the CO asked her if she wanted the interview conducted in Mandarin or English. She opted for English. Not sure if it made any difference. I got the impression that the outcome of the interview had already been determined.

Do your homework, be prepared and good luck.

I just had mine interview yesterday and my visa is approved. I can tell you from yesterday's first hand experience. Most of interviews were conducted in Mandarin and only a small portion in English. But again most of the applicants's sponsors are American Chinese.

If it's the spouse visa, the VO would want to know how the couple communicate with each other. So if the USC speaks Chinese, it's okay that the spouse's english is poor or hardly speaks English. If the USC only speaks English, then it's important that the spous's English is decent enough to at least communicate with English speakers.

I'm not Chinese and speak excellent Mandarin. She and I communicate 95% in Chinese. I also translated all our QQ logs into English. I would hope if she requests to be interviewed in Chinese this would not be an issue.

Huh?

Surely they don't have this rule based on whether the petitioner is a caucasian or not. That would be illegal racial profiling!

Are you just assuming that caucasian petitioners can't speak Chinese?

I'm a caucasian petitioner who speaks fluent Chinese, and for whom Chinese is the main language of communication with my beneficiary.

Sorry. This thread was at the top of the search results based on the keywords I searched for. I didn't that by responding to it, it would move this thread to the top for everyone to see. Guess I didn't realize how this forum works.

Don't worry, I am asking for this thread to be locked due to it is a zombie thread. But I have never heard of that rule but if a couple can't communicate effectively using it is usually asked about during the interview about how does the couple talk back and forth.
