Sooo, I have been reading the forums for a few months now and, as mentioned all over the place, these approval times seem to be completely random.

I would love to know how they work. Do they each just get a list of files and if someone is on holiday they sit there until they get back??

Our application is very straight forward, they mailed out our NOA1 on the 13th of Feb, our file hasn't been touched since then, yet someone gets approved who filed after us.

Methinks the system is broken! But you guys already know that :)

Darn, Trailmix, I saw you posted and hoped that maybe you had gotten an approval! You're the only person before me at Vermont :)

But I would like to add that I think your signature is wrong---it lists your NOA1 date as being in March. That can't be right...

Anyway, my husband went through all the I-130 approvals that he could find (when he should have been studying ;)) and came up with these statistics:

8% get NOA2 within 30 days of their NOA1

44% get NOA2 within 60 days of their NOA1

56% get NOA2 within 90 days of their NOA1

and 82% get NOA2 withing 120 of their NOA1

and the rest just sit there, not hearing anything, for a very long time (maximum so far has been 209 days)

However, he also noted that the NOA2 has a large standard deviation (4 or 5), which makes it pretty much impossible to say that there's a 50-50 chance you'll get an NOA2 within 90 days of your NOA1. So while it is pretty random, there is also some order to the chaos :)

I'm still hoping we're one of the 56% that gets our NOA2 within 90 days of the NOA1...as we're obviously not one of the 44% that will get it within 60 days :(

Oh, and I have to add that those stats are just for the Vermont Service Center. We're being really selfish and not really caring very much what happens at California, as it will most likely just make us jealous anyway. As they say, the grass is always greener on the OTHER side of the fence ;)

And to go a bit further....

95% will get their NOA2 withing 150 days

97% within 180

and the other 3% just waits...and waits...and panics.

Oh, and I have to add that those stats are just for the Vermont Service Center. We're being really selfish and not really caring very much what happens at California, as it will most likely just make us jealous anyway. As they say, the grass is always greener on the OTHER side of the fence ;)

And to go a bit further....

95% will get their NOA2 withing 150 days

97% within 180

and the other 3% just waits...and waits...and panics.

If you don't mind can you please explain how you came up w/these #'s. I would like to do the same for CSC.

Hi, I'm Geist's husband btw, but I don't post here really, I just read this forum.

I don't mind telling you how I came up with those stats. They are basically done by using some data mining and basic statistical calculations such as averages, medians, quintiles, standard deviations and percentages. Since it would take more time for me to explain how this is done, I just did the same for CSC, and here they are:

120 is the average days between NOA1 and NOA2

107 is the median days between NOA1 and NOA2

When the median is lower than the average, it signals that the wait is mostly shorter than the average, for VSC the average is 76 and the median is 90, which thus signals the opposite. The averages and medians are always downward estimates, because they include only those who have been approved prior to this date.

In CSC the following applies to waiting times:

3% get NOA2 within 30 days from NOA1

7% get it within 60 days,

24% within 90 days,

61% within 120 days,

80% within 150 days,

92% within 180 days,

...and the rest 8% wait longer. The percentages are cumulative. The standard deviation for CSC is about 3, while it's about 4 or 5 for VSC, meaning that CSC is more predictable.
