So how long is reasonable for getting a job in the US

I think I spent a month or two looking for a job, and got impatient. So I applied for a fast food job. I got hired the next day and am getting an average of 30-40 hours a week. Sure the pay sucks but it's work experience and beats sitting at home rolling your thumbs all day long. I would recommend working fast food while your looking for another job, both for the experience and the little extra money to the household, it's better than nothing at all.

Well, I'm not in the States yet, but know a few people who have been having problems because they were applying for the positions that were way below them. So take that into consideration too. Do not apply for jobs that you are overqualified for even if you are an immigrant or if you are lucky enough to land an interview for a position like that givevthem a reason why and reassurance that you're not going to leave in a month. Of course this applies if you have experience in that field and are applying for a lower position. However if it's a new field for you, then the story is different.

Good luck!

I know it is difficult to wait... I know you feel like you're putting your life 'on hold', but believe me at the end it's all worth it!

I would give a little different advise. It's really not a lot of chances to get equal position to what you had in your own country, because all your experience, references, etc. are abroad. I know that most immigrants have to start from positions way below them unless they're ready to look for high enough position for a very long time. So it's absolutely nothing wrong to apply to lower position, but don't show that you're overqualified. Seriously, if you're applying for position where only HS diploma required, why do you have to show your Masters Degree you got in your native country? Anyway they will not be able to check it. Just don't tell about things which can make you way overqualified, as we tell in Russia - "nobody pulling your tongue". :) Just my personal opinion.

I found my current job after almost a month applying everywhere. I wish I had a better job, but they are flexible with my schedule and hopefully I can take classes and get my degree. It's hard to be an immigrant, and requires a lot of patience with this economy. Even the new hires mentioned how hard was to find a job.

Hi.

I was in Rapid in 2011 on a J1 visa, i worked as a cocktail server in a waterpark in here. I finally got my EAD in march and started job hunting. Sent resumes everywhere, went myself there, called them and i got nothing. After consulting with my husband i went back to the water park and i know its not the best ever, but so far it has been worth it. Plus, i am still looking for jobs and as far as it pays my bills, its still a job to me. So bottom line, i only got in cause all my american friends were working in there and you need connections to get a job almost everywhere.
