A lot of people had a hand in what happened here: the rapists, whoever provided the alcohol, the lack of proper adult supervision for this party, who's house this incident happened and the victim/her parents. All parties involved exercised poor judgment.

I am sorry but IMHO driving on a desert road without a spare tire is an exercise in poor judgment.

Rape is way beyond that.

It is comical that way you puff your little chest out to show the "girls" you are one of them.

And by what means do you use?

By spring boarding off of things I never said. :bonk:

IN your mind, suggesting that we can do things to minimize the likelihood of becoming a victim.....actually is code word for -If you become a victim not only is it all your fault and the criminal is not to blame.

Ok, ok I give up!

lets tell our kids to go anywhere they want at anytime of the night, wearing whatever jewelry or clothes they want

and count on the hope that criminals will respect your "Right" to do so.

This will really teach those rapists!!!

Compassion and logic, two things you will never have. I'm done with it.

Would it be sexist to accuse you of running away like a girl?

Danno, I hope you don't have teenage daughters.

WHY?

From this conversation it would seem mine would a lot safer than most.

I believe in preparing kids for reality, when you don't do that .... you help make the victims.

Did anyone actually follow this case? I mean this specific case.

Originally the officials and the Big Red Foot Ball Team Coach tried covering it up but there was so much social media hat they were FORCED to do something about it.

The victim (age 16) came over from West Virginia to party with some friends as the last party of the summer was kicking off in Steubenville, OH. She actually was somewhat romantically involved or at least she liked or had a crush on and trusted one of the rapists in the case. She, like others there got intoxicated that night. But she drank so much she was at the point to where she was vomiting profusely and she couldn't walk.

One of the guys removed her shirt. They then left her in the middle of the road in a bra and shorts. As she was in the middle of the road, one of the teens (there were several) suggested they pay $3 to whomever would urinate on her. They did mention in a video (still available on the internet) that she got pissed on but the testimonies in court state otherwise.

As the day went on, the guys bounced from party to party taking her along with them. At one point, they even carried her by her legs and arms, as she was too drunk to walk or unconscious. There is photographs of them carrying her like that.

During the night, as they bounced to different parties, one digitally penetrated her in the back seat as another witness watched and recorded it on his iphone, she was still knocked out except a few times she woke up, murmured "No" and crashed again. Those videos were removed and cannot be retrieved.

Another witness, the guy driving the boys wanted to be the designated driver. He is one of the key witnesses and yet though he felt compelled to take his friend's keys away to stop him from driving drunk, he did nothing to help the rape victim. At one point during the night, as he was leaving the 2nd party, he noticed the victim on the floor, naked and both the rape suspects violating her on the floor. She gave no consent, she was knocked out, yet one was penetrating her with his hand and one was slapping his genitals on her thigh as to get ready to penetrate her. This key witness didn't say anything, but bid the guys goodbye and left the scene.

Afterwards they went on to more parties. Continuing to bring her along with them. Possibly passing her on to more friends. They all (members of the football team and high school) began sending lewd text messages and video taping the girl mentioning that she's "so raped".

Over the course of a few days, there were over 300,000 text messages exchanged between the teens.

There was specifc mention in a video taken at one of the parties where one of the guys did mention that they were raping her and it wasn't right. Still, even after the incident the teens tried to cover up and even mentioned that the feds would be all over it.

The victim had no clue what had happened to her. She remembers drinking that night and waking up with her clothes off. She only discovers what had happened when she saw the tweets and pics of her posted all over the net. After seeing them, because she is a teen- she texted one of the rapists, the guy she liked, and he tried minimalizing what happened. He tried saving himself with her parents as well right before they reported the incident at the police station.

As mentioned above- officials were reluctant to go forward, because its a small town and they hold their high school jocks in high regard. This football team and town has known to be extremely corrupt dealing with money laundering, gambling, organized crime, etc

Anonymous the famous hackers for peace and justice basically hacked and retrieved a bunch of things from the teens and basically gave them ultimatums that if they didn't go forwards they would post the addresses and social security numbers of the whole town involved.

The officials had no choice but to go forward. They also had no choice but to bring in an unbiased judge to oversea the case.

All of the witnesses involved, including those in the video were given immunity for their testimonies. Only the two teens were charged.

Protesters stood up against BIG RED a HUGE and very popular football team in the town of Steubenville, Oh.

Both rapists were on the football team and thought they were above the law snickering in the courtroom a few times too. The two teens charged (aged 16 and 17) were at first giving a possible sentence of juvenile detention until the age of 21, and then would have to register as a sex offender for the rest of their lives. One teen is sentenced for two years and the other is sentenced for one. The difference in sentence is because one was found guilty of distributing a nude image.

The effect on the victim is far greater. The girl has to deal with the emotional after effects, as well as the humiliation of having her body and rape plastered all over the net. She also has to deal with the fact that her 'friends' abandoned her in a drunken state and then turned around and accused her of being a known liar on the stand in the courtroom. Since her name was released publicly she has received death threats.

---------------------

The debate in this thread seems to be 'how do you not be a victim?'

So what exactly did this girl did wrong to become a victim. She went to a party with a boy she liked and her friends. Okay she drank too much. She shouldnt have been drinking. None of them should have.

Is that a giant at risk behavior that Danno is pushing or is that a normal thing. I believe its a normal thing. Kids go to parties and drink.

Dannos point is - walk into a fenced yard with 5 angry pitbulls and expect to be bitten. Walk down a street late at night lined with crack addicts waving a wad of cash and expect to be robbed.

Should we as a society add to that list- if youre a girl and you go to a party and have to much to drink and pass out- expect a boy to rape you? According to Danno- yes.

Is he right? what do we do as a society to stop it? Teach the girls not to be victims and at the same time teach the boys not to do the wrong. No ones the winner.

Rape prevention teaches how not to be a victim, but it also teaches how not to be the attacker. Sadly theres far more emphasis currently in schools and educational material out there geared towards how not to be the victim and very little on how not to be the attacker.

In response to such, someone came up with a top ten tips to end rape. Sort of a mockery of all the 10 ways not to be a victim lists. Its a list of 'How not to be a rapist.'

http://9gag.com/gag/5674046

Hopefully one day schools will create legitimate materials to educate men, and scenarios like what played out in Ohio wont repeat.

IN with your few good points is a lot of speculation on the circumstances of the case.

Anyone who watches the party tape will knows the girl was taken advantage of and if you watch the convicted boys speak after they were found guilty it seems that the one kid is still only owning up to taking the photo.

The idea that girls will be safe to pass out at parties when we "teach enough boys not to rape" .. is folly.

In fact if that method works, why not extend this education to all people who commit crime?

This education and respect for women is learned at home, if it is to be learned at all.

BUt in the end, as long as we know there are those among us who will seize an opportunity to harm others for their own desires

we do best to warn girls of this reality.

It takes a perverted agenda to do other wise, and unknowing teens are paying the price.

Hmmmm, so we know who to punish?

and we educate society about what is acceptable and what is not, correct?

and we educate our kids about the effects of drugs and alcohol, correct?

rape is the only crime that consistently drags the innocence of the victim into question. it's way past time to stop allowing such an improper burden to occur.

Your just wrong, it's only is cases like this where people ask questions about her lack of judgement.

This idea that everyone wants to blame the women is not based in any reality I have seen.
