Hi!

I am starting the process to be a US citizen. My question is, after the interview can I start the process to have a US Passport or do I have to wait until they schedule me for the Oath? I am planning on travelling this year to my country but I don't know if I would be able to receive the passport on time.

Thanks.

You're eligible to apply for a passport only if you're a US citizen, which takes place only at the oath. However, once you become a US citizen, you can apply and get a passport the same day if you apply at one of the passport agencies shown here. Proof of international travel within 2 weeks of your visit will be required.

You cannot apply for or receive a passport until you are a us citizen. You will not be a citizen until after your oath ceremony and have in hand your naturlization certificate. In order to get your first passport you must have proof of citizenship. Hope this helps!

you first need to raise your right hand to take the oath, then your a united states citizen and given your naturalization certificate sign it and make some color copies ,your us passport full the passport application and check for the fee take two passport photos.and send the original naturalization certificate it should take about two to three weeks, it will be returned to you in two different envelopes.

This is normally correct, however I will note at the Houston oath (which was over 2,000 each the last couple of months) they have always told the crowd anyone swearing in that morning could go downtown to the Houston Passport Agency and do a sameday app, without proof of travel. I've heard a few other ceremonies do that but only if you are in a city with a passport agency.

However it is not hard to get "proof of travel". Go to an airline webpage like United, go all the way through until just before hte pay screen and you can print an itin without purchase. Or you can buy a fully refundable ticket for some sort of int'l travel and present that, then get the refund (of cousre that ties up some credit for a couple of weeks).

Both have worked for me and my employees. Once I was not even asked for proof of travel.

Good luck!
