My son is dating a girl from Brazil (Goias) and his phone bill this month (landline because she doesn't have internet in her house) cost $450!!!

Anyone have any experience with making calls to Brazil more cheaply than that.

get a RAZA.com account - he can dial a local number and connect directly with her. I swear by RAZA, did alot of research on fees and such, this was the best bet. $10.00 gets me about 90 minutes to call Abu Dhabi, when thats gone, it just takes the money out of my account and gives me more minutes!

Or he can get a magicjack and send it to her if she has access to high speed internet, and it will be essentially free. But without good internet, the quality will be spotty.

Since she doesn't have it at home, she will have to go to an internet cafe.

Tell him send her a magicjack that don't need computer, its plug in the wall, she however have to have cable/internet service, they can chat 24/7 for free and she gets

a USA # : example 212 5551212 ....Its $39.99 per yr paid via Credit card, the 1st year us free

Thanks all - I wasn't sure I wuodl even get any responses so these are very much appreciated!

her mum refuses to get internet at home. My son and her talk when he gets home from work which is around midnight her time so not conducive to going to internet cafe. I will let him know abou the other options.

If he uses VIBER application on iphone or smartphone assume it costs whatever minutes would be charged for overseas call and that's it - that may be a good option.

We worked out Vonage would still cost approx $300 per month. :(

We tried Pennytalk which works great for me calling the UK but by the time you factor in Pennytalk at 9 cents a miute plus home phone provider who charges by the minute for each call - I feel like we're paying for each call twice and that shouldn't be necessary!

Thanks for all your suggestions.

You can try companies like Vonage. Some cable companies have discounted plans to certain countries. Good luck

I have used Vonage worldwide, it's awesome.

They are running a special now for calls to Brazil - unlimited for $9.99/mo for the first three months, then $30/mo after that (also unlimited).

I don't understand why Vonage would be so much. Do she not have a landline? You could use it too, to call Uk landlines. His or your mobile phone could be set up as an extension of your Vonage landline. Then a dial around access number you could program into the mobile allows calling unlimited from the mobile in addition to from the landline at no additional charge.

Vonage replaces cox phone. Plug into your router and use any phone instrument you want. We use a cordless with 3 additional handsets. You can even get your current phone number transferred to Vonage.

Hi - Why don't you try a Skype to Go number the rates are really good and the basis and costs of how it works are below - the cost for unlimited minutes from UK to Brazil to a landline is £7.46 / month.

Subscriptions

Calling landlines

120 min per month 1.6p/min (1.8p incl. VAT) for £1.89/month (£2.17 incl. VAT)

400 min per month1.2p/min(1.4p incl. VAT) for £4.99/month (£5.74 incl. VAT)

Unlimited Latin America (Includes Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and 7 other countries. Excludes Colombian rural areas - LEX. Calls are unlimited) NB - Their is a fair usage policy but any non-commercial user shouldn't be effected by this at all - my interpretation not Skypes!!! LOL!! for £6.49/month (£7.46 incl. VAT)

You register the phone numbers you want to call from (landlines or mobiles) - as many as 10 different ones I think and choose a local UK number to assign to his girlfriends land line number in Brazil and when he wants to call her he just uses the "Local UK Number' - My wife's mother uses this from the US to her friends over here as they do not have internet and at 75 has no wish to get it. My wife and I use a variety of methods to talk/text/type/see each other - but for persons with no internet or smart phone Skype to Go is a good solution and you pay month on month for the subscription so can cancel at anytime.

Just search for Skype to go in a search engine. He could even just buy Skype credit for the first time just to try it out - the rates are dearer Skype Credit - 1.6p1/min (1.8p incl. VAT) - but it would prove it works OK.

Hope it helps and if you need any further assistance with this - just ask.

Chris.
