The positive side of long distance

So many of us are separated from our loved ones for months (or years). While it obviously is not preferable to actually being with them, I thought maybe we could talk about the good things it can offer. Maybe a little optimism could be beneficial?

For me, the separation has allowed me to establish myself in a new city. I was able to move across the country on my own and create a new social life and such independently. It also offered me the opportunity to focus solely on my career in film. Not having anyone to worry about at home or to rush home to allowed be to throw myself entirely into work. I think having my SO here would've made the transition into 14 hour days a lot harder. I've also been able to learn a lot about myself as I do a lot of things on my own now - from solo lunch dates to cinema trips by myself. I know it probably has to do with my age as well, but I needed this time apart to really establish myself as an individual and not just part of a couple. Still can't wait for him to be here, but at least there were some positives, right?

I was able to work two jobs and really be comfortable living on my own. Also, I can eat what I want, when I want. I also buy more steaks for dinner. Being apart makes me appreciate the time I'm with him so much more.

Our long distance relationship happened a long time ago but here's what I can remember:

- he'd write me some romantic billets-doux more frequently

He still gives me sweet little notes these days but not as much as he did in the past.

- when I was too busy at work, he'd wake up at 3 am PT just to talk to me

He never made excuses why he couldn't reach out to me. He would create reasons in order to hear me speak.

- I learned that he is not into cybersex

Not once did he show his peen on the webcam and I thought that was sexy.

- I could buy any clothes, shoes, and purses without him commenting on my fashion picks

These days he would complain why I keep "very big purses." Everytime we make a donation pile, he would not falter to nominate my handbags, shoulder bags, and a few high heels that I have not worn for six months.

Through it all, I still adore him so much and I'm glad that we are together everyday.

the biggest positive I recall is the focus on verbal communication. You really have to learn to talk and not just fill your time with activities. Learning and truly understanding the commitment I was making was another positive. There was certainly as lot of time to think about it.

It's like a really long honeymoon, romancing each other long distance. And lots of sharing, too. Today I heard Sandhill Cranes. I love hearing them. So I found a link to website with their voice and shared with hubby. He loved it. So I looked up some other birds I am familiar with and shared their songs. We can always find something interesting to talk about, food, nature, life in America...

The Distance has given us a huge opportunity to just talk, about everything, little habits we notice both when we are together and apart. Like how when he is thinking about what he is going to type, his tongue sticks out. I don't think I spent nearly half the time talking to my ex that I have wtih my fiance. And even though we don't have a timeline for when I will be there, we have talked alot about the dynamics of how the new family will look.

Both of us are very content to have our own beds when we're apart. We love sleeping together when we're together...but it is so nice when it's just you in a bed to nest and spread out however you'd like!
