That's what wrong with schools today.

imo, the autobiography of malcolm x should be mandatory high school reading. life changer. and much more relevant than say, romeo & juliet or the odyssey.

and i'm sure you've noticed how often the black panthers are shown in a negative light right here on the board - even if the new group isn't the same as the original.

:ot2: I have a way guaranteed to reduce the lethality of guns! Reduce substantially the weight of bullets! Make all weapons to fire only 'air soft' type projectiles like my son and his friends like to use in make- believe combat.

Back to reality, the purpose of a gun IS to kill and maim. The real question should be how do we make certain that they are only used to kill and maim the proper targets. That means keeping them out of the hands of those who would use them in a criminal or suicidal manner. The left, myself included, must accept that the American public will not consent to being disarmed. Guns do serve a legitimate self-defense purpose for many owners. There must be ways that illegal uses can be substantially reduced. It is anathema to most conservatives but a good starting point would be universal registration and licensing. By tracking guns from manufacture, distribution, and private possession patterns can be identified that will suggest mechanisms to reduce illegal use of these 'tools'! I doubt that anything substantial will get done in the near future but as the tea party brings about the self-destruction of much of the GOP opportunities for reasonable measures will arise. :)

Look at what was going on back then. Blacks were fighting for equal rights, we had folks like MLK and Malcolm X, the black panthers were trying to do something positive and radical at the same time. They didn't have time for the foolishness we are dealing with now. Back then, Mothers held the house down while Fathers worked a few jobs to provide for their families. Church was a must, and it held some communitites together. As Bane put it "Peace has cost us our strength, victory has defeated us".

I said prior to the 60's.. and you are 100% correct again. Someone argued the whole problem was income inequality, which is ignorant at best. I was saying there was much more inequality back prior to the 60's but we had much less violence.

You nailed the cause perfectly. The family has fallen apart, along with peronal values and a large part of the blame lies at the feet of major social programs and social engineering.

read better:

Second, I'll piggy back off of val, income inequality, poverty, drugs, gangs, no home training, poor education. These things all factor into why the murder rate is higher in an urban setting. You can't compare white poor class to black poor class, they aren't equal.

i said income equality in attempt to simplify. all the additional problems su&marvin listed are the result of generational poverty.

being reasonable about gun safety research and control does not solve the problem danno was digging at earlier, or did you not read his post assisting me in the formation of my argument?

I have learned to accept that Danno and his arguments are 'special' and not resolvable by ordinary and reasonable discourse!

The problem is that most folks don't do their research on the above mentioned people or organizations, or worse, they pick and choose what they want to take away from the reading. Some folks here equate the Black Panthers to the KKK. People don't realize what they were trying to do back then.

If any of the civil rights leaders from the 60's were still alive and were still heavy in activism, they'd be ashamed of what we have become. I see where val is coming from, tying in unequal pay adds into the racism as a whole. It's not the only thing, just one of the moving parts. I just added to what was already started.

From the actual post I responded to and not the one you tried to use like a reserve chute
