We don't know if it is possible, but my wife's mom is here visiting (wife's father passed away, we felt it would be good for her mom to stay with us for a bit). My wife is doing an internship as an urban planner, mon-wed, wich is my 3 days off, for now. I just received word that I got admitted to the local 3 (union of operating engineers) apprenticeship academe (been on the waiting list for 5 years). Now the issue, is I will no longer have mon-wed off & the academe is 5 weeks unpaid, & I will be making only $17 an hour for a couple of years while serving my apprenticeship. We have 2 boys, oldest of 4 years, youngest of 15 months, & we will not be able to afford day care for 2 kids.

Is there any way we can we can keep my mother in law here legally?

your wife cannot petition for her mom until she becomes a citizen. You could apply for extension of her visa but sometimes this backfires as USCIS could start looking at this as intent to immigrate with time especially when it is done too many times.

How long is her visitor's visa ( as I assume that is how she came in). If its multiple entry then her option is to go back before her visa expires and return every few months but again that is a some $$$$$ involved right there.

my wife is a permanent resident. Only a passport is needed to visit the us from Portugal, no visa needed.

You can't do anything to her to stay here longer and not violate the law.
