My husband has been given the run-around trying to get a drivers license in Utah.

We suggest going to the Fairpark Drivers License Office: 1095 Motor Ave. (approx. 200 N 1000 W) Salt Lake City, Utah 84116. They know the laws and they know what documents are acceptable. We went to the Draper office 3 times, each time we were told we didn't have the correct documents. When we went to the Fairpark office, with all of the same forms, they accepted what we had and are getting his license sent out. There is some additional information they have to verify through DHS, something to do with his EAD, I don't think everyone will have this same problem.

We currently have a pending I-485, Adjustment of Status, but not yet approved. The Utah DL document requirements are here http://publicsafety.utah.gov/dld/acceptable_id.html. My husband was applying for a Limited-Term Drivers License. Basically, his drivers license will only be good as long as his EAD.

To prove you have legal/lawful status you must have: Unexpired Employment Authorization Document (EAD) issued by DHS, Form I-766, or Form I-688B; verified by the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements system (SAVE) AND Pending application for adjustment of status to legal permanent resident or conditional resident (NOA 1 for I-485).

I hope this will help someone that may be having the same problem that we had. Keep in mind this is only for the state of Utah, each state has different laws for drivers licenses.

I know this is a year old but I was just wondering if you had to take a drivers test to get a license? Maybe not for a limited term one? My brother lives in Utah as well and his AOS is pending, he went to the DMV and was told he has to take a drivers test to get a license. I would really rather not! But will do what I have to do. I haven't sent in my AOS yet (hopefully this week) so don't have to worry about it until I have my EAD but I am planning in advance!

11/09/2016 - i-751 sent

11/14/2016 - NOA1

12/08/2016 - Biometrics

06/04/2018 - i-751 approved

I'm not aware of any states where you can get your driver's license without taking a driving test, you usually need to do both the written test and the driving test itself even if you do have a valid foreign driver's license.

your best bet is to contact the respective state dmv website or office.
