So your in favor of letting all those who make bad choices in life fend for themselves and stopping the massive government entitlement programs and stop making all taxpayers pay for the mistakes of others.

For those who purposely continue to make the same mistakes, yes. There are and always will be people who fall on hard times and need help, I have no problem with helping these people out as long as they want to help themselves too. There is no blanket policy that can be thrown over this.

Here's the thing. I'm all for freedom of choice when it comes to food but unfortunately people keep making the wrong choice. And its way cheaper and easier for lower income people to buy unhealthy food. My issue is that my freedom to not pay taxes into medicare for a completely avoidable problem (obesity) is always going to be ignored. And the rate of taxes into medicare is likely going to go up when low income people (assuming they're not insured)continue to make bad decisions. Clearly the freedom of choice is not working, look at obesity rates in America. Maybe we need a few boundaries.

Uh yeah obesity in lower income countries is much lower than obesity in higher income countries. Just wanted to point that out. You may continue.

(After you) fix your eyes then you will be able to note:

The prevalence of raised body mass index increases with income level of countries up to upper middle income levels. The prevalence of overweight in high income and upper middle income countries was more than double that of low and lower middle income countries. For obesity, the difference more than triples from 7% obesity in both sexes in lower middle income countries to 24% in upper middle income countries.

Your reading comprehension leaves a lot to be desired. The original post that you replied to was talking about the lower income people in the US and that it is easier and cheaper for them to purchase unhealthy foods, which in turn leads to higher rates of obesity. There was no comparison being made as to which class of people is more apt to be obese. It was a simple and factual statement.

Yeah but they don't have the commercial machine we have here. Point is, cheap and readily available food in the US is high in calorie. People with lower incomes find it much easier to buy prepared food off a dollar menu to feed their family. Fast food in low income areas is a huge problem in my opinion.

But where does it stop? You just can't legislate common sense. People have to bear responsibility for their actions and it is not the government role to get into that.

People are bearing responsibility one way or another. We are seeing more and more teenagers and even pre teens with high blood pressure nowadays, something that was unheard of 20 years ago. There are more and more cases of middle age people presenting with fatty liver disease, which will ultimately lead to liver failure. Of course we have all have heard the statistics for obesity and the diseases that go along with that, but the reality is that this is a crisis that is projected to bankrupt the healthcare system in America, and we're only looking at maybe 15 years or so for that to happen.

I realize there is a gut reaction to defend freedom of choice, but we should also take a step back and ask what it is that causes someone to consume a drink that contains 25 teaspoons of sugar in it. Or ask why is sugar added to everything - even things like milk, bread, and salad dressing. The answer is sugar is a highly refined and extremely addictive substance, and it's one of the easiest ways for companies to get consumers coming back for more.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see HFCS disappear from the market in the near future. I doubt that would happen with sugar, but if you understand the way most people metabolize sugar, there are parallels with things like nicotine and cocaine. I'm not in favor of local regulation the way they did this, but to suggest the government has no role ignores reality. I can give you a long list of highly refined, addictive substances that are banned or regulated.

How do you propose the government "cuts someone off" from having children?

I was talking about cutting off their funding. Take the kids away and put them in social services, and stop the money from going to the Mother.

That makes much more sense. I thought you were gonna pull a Nature Boy on me and start talking about the government should force women to take birth control or get their tubes tied.
