This legislation was discussed in Off Topic a couple of weeks ago. The thread didn't get much notice if I recall.

And also if I recall, the article referenced in that thread maintained the law is written ambiguously enough that it could actually be used to hold USC's.............

I'm not certain, but I think the Patriot Act can -- and in some situations, does -- strip away due process, and other rights and priviledges we've been accorded in this country if certain security forces deem it appropriate.

Of course...who's to say what is "appropriate?" This is not good.

First the Department of Homeland Security wants "clearance" for all U.S. citizens to leave or re-enter the United States, and now this for permanent residents? What next? Neighbor spying on neighbor? Family members reporting each other to the government for not being completely and totally in agreement with all policies? I mean, where does it end? :(

You know...the plan all along was for my fiancee to come down to the United States from Canada. If this sort of thing keeps happening, I might just move to Canada myself instead. That is...if I'm even allowed to do so, with the current (and possible future) laws that'll be passed.

this is stupid,

an enemy combatant is someone who does not claim allegiance to a country. Especially one who has not signed to the Geneva Convention.

That is why there is a distinction.

No one is getting snagged off the street because they made a one time donation to "bad place" .

You people worry too much. Unless of course you are doing somthing wrong. Wait I have a thought, are most of the men comming into the country fraudulently, just trying to get LPR or citizenship just to dupe the US. Maybe we should check all of you out.

See what i mean, you can either choose to be a part of the solution or someone just trying to stir the pot.

Live a good honest life and you have nothing to worry about.

Even if they are "comming into the country fraudulently", I doubt they'll be snagged off the street.

Unless of course they are enemy combatants. :P

"Just live a good life" and mind your own business works out well until they accidentally nab you for a crime you did not commit and you have no recourse. ;)

It also sounds like the same argument for wire tapping. As long as you're not a terrorist, you have nothing to worry about...

Exactly! The protections enshrined in our constitution provide protections against government mistakes/stupidity/power grabs and what not. The government is not infallible. We need these protections for the times that they goof up.

Excuse me if I'm a wee bit protective of our civil rights and liberties. It's one of the things that makes america great.

it is true, what do you have to worry about.

Oh and by the way the wire tapping policy is only on people that have clear ties with terrorism. it is not the media hyped, "you could be tapped right now" thing that is being presented.

How can you have no recourse, if you live a good life and are accountable for your actions, how could you be "accidentally nabbed". If some one is going to set you up, I would hope they do it right.

Because the government isn't perfect. They make mistakes. Accidents happen. Those guarentees are there to protect us against these imperfections, mistakes and accidents.

Lots of people make a big deal of this, think of it this way; if you want to keep your job you may have to give up some extra sleep but if you are going to life by the same rules. Maybe you should just sleep in and they will understand the fact that you have the right to sleep in whenever you want. But do understand that every action has a reaction. If you are willing to accept those consequences, then do it.

We could point and counter point this till the ends of time, i know what i am willing to do to maintain my overall freedom, do you?

Umm, yeah, if you want to give up some of your "sleep," then by all means, go ahead and give yours up. I myself will fight for all the "sleep" entitled to me.
