Is there a clear definition of an "enemy combatant"?

If this law applies to "enemy combatants" only, I don't see what it has to do with

immigrants living in the U.S.

Ali Saleh Kahlah Al-Marri, a citizen of Qatar, was arrested in 2001 while studying in the United States. He has been labeled an "enemy combatant," a designation that, under a law signed last month, strips foreigners of the right to challenge their detention in federal courts.

Why was he labeled an enemy combatant (presumably a person fighting U.S. forces abroad)

if he was studying in the U.S.?

Clearly this guy was up to no good.

Why can't they just charge and convict him?

What's the point of keeping him in detention indefinitely?

I don't get it.

maybe to see what else they can uncover? it does appear on the surface his conditions aren't necessarily too comfortable. tactic for extracting information maybe?

Since 2001?? Even if this guy knew anything, he probably forgot by now.

Yes it appears that this guy has some connections with terrorists but even POW's get treated better than this...

This is a very scary law what happens if New Zealand (tongue in cheek) becomes an enemy of the US... will I be carted away in the middle of the night as a suspect... (we are taking over this country.. in 500 gnerations all of the US will be under NZ control!)

But seriously, James and I were chatting about rights and freedoms a few weeks ago, from the outside (of the country) the US bill of rights looks great, but when you get here and actual start to live here and integrate into society, because alot of these laws introduced since 9/11 have trounced all over a citizens freedoms, it no longer is the land of the free.... it is becoming the land of the free - but only to a point that point being dictated by the federal govt as per their policies of the day. As for non citizens well..... SOL... sorry

'Enemy combatant' isn't carefully defined under the law. We intuitively think of it as being on a battlefield or swept up in a sting. But it could be construed (and how are you going to challenge it, without a court date?) as any aid or comfort given to any terror group.

Accidentally donate to a charity you thought was legit but funnels money?

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

F*cking A. Donate generously to the ACLU peoples.

According to USCIS, a perm. res. is protected by all laws of the United States:

Rights

To live permanently in the United States provided you do not commit any actions that would make you removable (deportable) under the immigration law (section 237, Immigration and Nationality Act).

To be employed in the United States at any legal work of your qualification and choosing.

To be protected by all of the laws of the United States, your state of residence and local jurisdictions.

To vote in local elections where United States Citizenship is not required.

The constitution is the basis of our laws. Due process people, due process! I imagine they could strip someone of their residency, but even that would require due process!
