I know that here in California you need a Social Security Number to get your drivers license.

When my EAD card came, I went and applied for a number, the card has not come in yet. In the meantime, I went to my AOS interview and got approved. So from what I've been told, the Social Security number I applied to with my EAD (which is currently on the way) will say "To be used only with EAD card" or something like that. So now when my green card arrives in a few weeks, I have to return to the Social Security office and have them give me a new card.

Now my question is, I want to go get my driver's license, can I go do it with the S.S. card that I applied for with my EAD, even though I don't have my EAD anymore since the IO kept it after the interview? Or should I wait until I get my green card and new S.S. card?

Do they even ask you to show a card when you go get your license? Or simply the number? Because in that case, my number won't change, so I can just go get it. The thing is, the only other documentation I have of myself right now is my passport, birth certificate, and the letter of approval I was given at the interview.

So in your experience what do you guys think? Do they ask to see the card? Can I just go with the S.S. #, my passport, and letter of approval?

You must show your SSN AND at least one way of a legal documentation (EAD OR GC). In your case you can go with your current SSN card (if you still have it) cause the number is going to be the same anyways, and with you GC, once you have it.

But most of the states ask you to show the cards. Having you passport with you is not gonna help you cause your I94 is already expire.

I got my driver license with my SSN and my EAD and they asked me to see both of the documents

My wife still has her SSC she applied for on the K-1 visa which has the "NOT VALID FOR WORK WITHOUT DHS AUTHORIZATION" When she showed that and her GC at the DMV, the lady told us we could have that removed. I responded that I knew that but why bother waiting in line at the SSA office just to get something removed that is taken care of by showing the GC. We also had to show evidence of her residency which was the car registeration. Now days they want to actually see the card. You could go to the SSA office with the GC and ask for a printout of the SSN and to get a new card issued without the restriction. It is up to you whether you want to go back and get a new card issued. For us, we will wait until my wife gets her citizenship when we have to inform them of her status change.

Good luck,

Dave

You are not required to have that "Valid For Work Only With DHS Authorization" wording removed. You can (by showing your green card to the SSA), but you don't have to.

I personally wouldn't bother, unless I happened to be there on other business, but it's ultimately up to you.
