Dear VJ family,

My husband is working on his Master's degree and he has been receiving financial aid for the past year and a half. I have been out of the country for almost a year, which means I did not earn any income within the US.

Should we still file for taxes? What is your advice?

If you are a us resident you are taxed on your foreign income. You can exclude up to $95,000. So try filing and use the exclusion or foreign tax credit. You may also get the earned income credit depending on how much you both earned. Did your husband earn any income while in college?

No, he did not. Is that bad? We are basically using his financial aid for our utilities, rent and other bills. He did not have enough time to get a job since his graduate degree is so demanding.

My income was earned with freelance, so there was not huge income there also.

Go ahead and gather all the evidence you need and try filing and see what the refund looks like. You might be pleasantly surprised with the EIC.

I was in a similar situation. My wife and I didnt file any taxes while living abroad. We contacted IRS and were directed to their website. If you made less than the required amount, you don't have to worry about filing taxes. Good luck!

If you can't change your mind, are you sure you still have one?
