I like your attitude - just because your climb is more difficult than everybody else, doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Nietzsche says, "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger." Character comes from adversity.

Thanks, this is why I am all about doing it the right way. When you are the minority, you will always get the shady looks. No cutting corners or taking shortcuts, I know folks are looking for it.

what is crab mentality?

Crabs in a barrel, when one tries to climb out, someone from within the barrel will drag you back down. This is why we always say, if you leave the ghetto, you are forgetting where you came from. Like people want to live in poverty and get robbed, shot, or killed for the rest of their lives.

I tend to agree, to this extend. Many disadvantaged communities suffer from the "crab mentality". No amount of outside intervention will overcome that.

that's why we need to inject a lot of money in to these communities. everyone who needs education, therapy, job training, jobs, childcare, etc in these neighborhoods should receive it. period. as a country we have no problem throwing money at other countries in attempt to rebuild but we won't do it here. if you're poor and dumb and addicted to crack and popping out kids left and right we want to make fun of you, liken you to an animal and then sweep you and your offspring under the rug and forget you exist. why is that? is it because we don't want to acknowledge that there is an undeniable privilege associated with being white and middle class? and to a lesser extent, being black and middle class? i think so. we all want to think that we earned everything we have. we despise the notion of that effort being compromised by what race or what economic class you were born into.

All while yelling about what an outrage it is that you're receiving ANY kind of assistance.

you said "white people have got to realize you can't erase 400 years of oppression in 35 years" while suggesting the bootstrap approach as a remedy. i find that ironic and ignorant.

I was actually saying that Blacks can no longer blame all their problems on whites, and whites also have to realize that you can not overcome 400 years of oppression in 35 years. A reasonably intelligent individual would interpret that to mean that both sides need to change their thinking a bit.

if you think that is ignorant or can not understand that see the part above about a "reasonably intelligent individual"

Oh Jesus.. Let's throw more money at it... That's it . Really.. Let's see if your dumb, addicted to crack and spitting out babies left and right, the first goal should be to neuter you.

okay. let's just keep locking up the young black youth that don't kill each other off before reaching 21. if we keep at it - they'll all disappear soon enough. the whole silly problem will be gone soon enough.

that's one method of approach. it didn't get very far in its last go round, but maybe folks are ready for it now.

You'd have to lock them up long before 21 for that to work. And it would do nothing for the white population that lives by the same flawed culture.

We just don't have the money and never will, to solve every social ill by throwing more money at it. What we are throwing at it now, needs to be spent a lot smarter if its going to do any good.

So what's your solution? Or should we keep ignoring that there's a problem?

The people in these neighborhoods don't have the options they should have. No education, no jobs, no activities for children. Poverty breeds poverty. How do you suggest fixing a poverty issue without money?

Yes, let's throw billions at silly wars instead. Forget rebuilding THIS country, let's continue to attempt to rebuild others.

i don't believe racism is the catalyst for the continued depravity among inner city youth. the catalyst now is the long entrenched generational poverty & the extremely high incarceration rate/biased drug charge sentencing and penalties. the only solution, imo, is to inject as much money as possible into rebuilding inner cities from the ground up with extreme attention paid to education, living wages, and welfare with the goal of independent living as opposed to sustaining poverty.

When did this great decay start.... Google war on poverty.. Then google out of wedlock births...

i disagree. we invest ridiculous amounts of money in so many other countries but turn our backs on our own failing cities, on our own people. anytime further financial support is brought up, or another approach suggested, we'd rather put the burden of improvement on the disenfranchised. we consider such aid wasteful and its recipients undeserving. the reactions i got just now completely prove such attitudes are prevalent.

I just don't understand how people justify the attitude. I guess I'm just a bleeding heart liberal who believes the people in our country should come first and get the opportunities they deserve but currently have no access to.

We'd rather make fun of these people, suggest neutering them, than actually come up with a decent solution. What are these people in these neighborhoods supposed to do? They're stuck and nobody wants to spend the money to rebuild these neighborhoods and attempt to change the attitude and environment so poverty stops breeding more poverty.

What should these people do without an education and without jobs?
