Call me crazy, but I'd like to think that if a word is offensive, it is offensive. No matter who says it to who, whether it's used in a song, whatever.

that's silly. curse words aren't offensive to me. i use them when among friends/coworkers who also curse. when i'm in the presence of people who do not curse - i refrain from cursing. see how that works?

Words are just words, man.

I'm going to use that excuse the next time I drop the f-bomb in front of my boss.

Amen.... I agree with you 100%.. Much like you, and albeit from a totally different perspective, I know how bad it was. Slavery ended in Middle ga about 1985 or so. That is why I am so vocal about, blacks being their own worse enemy now, and why I point out how stuff that's called racism now days is not.

We have a 50% plus high school drop out rate here, and every where you look are foul mouthed young black males running around with their butts hanging out, mumbling some form of unintelligible English ( I can make out the MOFO's and GD's) . They are killing each other at alarming rates, and fathering generations of fatherless government dependent kids. Most of them have never experienced anything close to racism . The schools are cesspools of violence, drugs and unwed young mothers. The crime rate here is through the roof and about 90% of our violent crime is young black males.

Now all this is awful, and white people have got to realize you can't erase 400 years of oppression in 35 years. However the black community has got to start accepting some responsibility and stop making idiots like Al Sharpton the spokesperson for so many issues. Look at black role models... Michael Vick, Ray Lewis etc etc. Those guys are human garbage but they are gods in these parts. Sad Sad.

How dod you break thru with a positive message ? The black kids here who study and try to act like a human, are mocked and teased as acting white. A good friend of mine and church mate, who happens to be black was at the house with his wife Sat night. he said many of the same things, but he still defends the massive social programs that caused a lot of this.

Oh well rant for the day done. Everything I just said is a fact. Guess telling facts makes me racist ?

This is what makes a difference; you see how you wrote this message? Where is the slang, the ebonics, the mention of baby daddies and 50 dollar nails? This is how you convey a message without the racial overtones. You wrote what you saw without the stereotyping, just facts. I know it's bad in our community, and I condemn the behavior that most embrace, yet I don't defend welfare or government assistance to those who need it. I think they should revamp the program and put restrictions in place so you can't abuse the system.

The only way to get through is for people to stop glamorizing that type of behavior, when rappers stop advocating drug use, gang ties, treating women like garbage, when comedians stop using the N word to make their material funny(google Sinbad, he never cussed and he is hilarious). And white folks can help by hiring blacks that are qualified, but don't discriminate when the person you are hiring is called Jamal, or Tinisha. It will take some time, but maybe one day it can be achieved.

Tarantino?

Yep, I wanted to check out Django Unchained and I heard the word is used so much, my mom left in disgust.

Given the subject matter, it's used an insane amount. But I strongly suggest you give it a chance. It's one of the best films I've ever seen. A very satisfying end.

Nobody is advocating or has advocated the use of the word.

It was simply noted that the black community is silent about the use of the term within the black community. The reverse is true - the black community is angered if the term originates or is used outside the black community.

That is a simple fact. That simple fact would imply at least that the black community does not find the term all that offensive, or at least not offensive enough to take a formal stand or position on, as long as it originates within the black community.

So because some black people use it towards each other, that means the entire black community doesn't find it offensive?

Racial equality is being able to throw around the n-word as much as you please and not have anyone care? Weird. Go ahead and use it. Let me know how it goes.

Don't let the man bring you down, Herschel. Start using it! You show those racists.

i don't get it.

I have the bootleg(I know shameful, but my folks at work already passed it around and it's on my desk now) and I have been debating it for about a week. I want to see it, but I don't know how I will feel about it after I watch it.

I, personally, found parts pretty uncomfortable to watch. Again, given the subject matter, that's to be expected. But seriously, the characters are fantastic (and the actors even better) ... it's worth giving it a chance. I don't think you'll regret it.

Actually it depends on where in the community you go. I know the people I associate with know better, and if you go around the older generation, they say it, but it's when they are telling a story of what they've been through. My grandfather has it bad, when he says it, you can see the anger in his eyes, like it happened yesterday. So don't generalize the entire black community, because there are some of us that know what that term stands for.

Is it? Since some of us are unaware of this and you appear to be fully in the know I guess it would not be a problem at all for you to kindly provide reference to / example of of this quite heavy debate.

noted incorrectly. the black community is hardly silent about it, it's actually debated quite heavily.

Fish are racist too

post-53169-0-75958500-1363016395_thumb.jpg

Actually the use of the term race is used very often in ichthyology to identify fishes. There are parts of the world where it is very difficult to separate between species and subspecies, so the fish will often be known by genus name, species name (possibly subspecies to) and finally race name.

An example, Melanotaenia trifasciata Goyder River. With Goyder River being the race. It further defines the fish by its color pattern and often times even body shape from other fish of the same species. There are over 30 different races of this species, I've just mentioned the most well known one.

Just wanted to put to bed this idea that there is no race in nature, because there certainly is and a lot of it.

You can go back to your argument now

Thanks for the reference.

Black America's response is also hypocritical, profoundly irrational and infantile. Black America's actions, which shall be referred to as the Jackson Syndrome, on one hand unsoundly gives everyone in the universe a pass to use the n-word, but then when someone outside the Black community uses the word, African Americans have the audacity to become indignant. Truly, something unnatural and abnormal exists when it comes to this scenario; this line of thinking is tantamount to an individual throwing a rock through someone's window, and then when someone throws a rock back into that individual's window, they cannot understand how something of that sort could have come about.

That's what I said. No further need for your answers.

Yeah - that sure sounds like hot debate to me
