Ok then I think I got this.

It's ok for black to people to call each other the N word some of the time.

It's never ok for white people to call black people the N word at anytime.

Just making sure I understand the rules in this country's quest for racial equality.

is it super important to you that you're allowed to use the word? why is it an issue? black people have their own hair care products - do you feel jilted?

jeez. but he's not black, he's white - therefore, he's not allowed to say it without showing disrespect. that's a consequence of history, not reverse racism.

Got it now. More special rules.

I can't think of any word someone would call me that would pi$$ me off. I would consider the source, and move on.

Good for you.

History matters, especially in regards to that word. There really isn't one that's comparable that was used towards white people that has the history and meaning that the n-word does.

Now, if you think it's no big deal, go ahead and use it as much as you'd like. Nobody can stop you.

It's just not fair, is it? When will white people in this country get equal treatment?!

Not at all. But if someone called me a racist because I used those hair care products, I would wonder why.

you do realize there are lasting cultural effects of slavery? of our history as a country? these effects are pliant, they change with each new generation. i don't understand why you're so bummed about it not being respectable for a white person to use that word..seems childish, not a bump in the road towards racial equality.

They even have their own television channel. WHEN WILL WHITE PEOPLE GET THEIR OWN CHANNEL?

So why do you never here a black activist protesting it's use by so many popular black artists but when Michael Richards uses it the world goes nuts. If Richards had been black it would have been a no big deal. That is Racism

You're talking to someone who protests it in any form. I can't stand that word, and it sickens me to hear in used in any song, movie, or even other blacks who say it. And I don't think that blacks own it as well. No one should ever use it, you can't put a positive spin on it in my eyes. I know there are a lot of blacks that disagree with me, but any type of racial slur is never ok under any circumstances. Kind of like those who have to use profanity or put folks down to get their point across, you have no class.

My parents and grandparents went through hell trying to make it to the middle, I will be damned if I shame them by embracing ignorance.

Thank you! That is the point. If a word is bad, it is bad. Doesn't matter who is saying it. I don't know why people can't wrap their head around that.

Which is what I was saying. Just because some black people use it publicly, that doesn't mean that the black community as a whole finds it acceptable. I would say most probably find it just as offensive, regardless of who it's coming from.

no. marvin voiced his opinion on the word and doesn't use it himself and there are plenty of people who feel the exact same way as him. there are also people that do not agree with him and use the word to voice camaraderie. i know young white boys in highschool who use that word with their black friends and it means nothing to any them. but then again, they probably haven't had the uncomfortable task of reading tom sawyer aloud in class before they edited out the slurs. for me, coming from a different time, hearing the word puts me on edge.

the meaning of words do change over time, to reflect the culture in which they are used. it's called linguistics.

OK. More special rules. I need to write these all down for future reference.

My best friend, a woman, calls me "b*tch" as a term of endearment.

However, I would not want a man calling me the same thing.

I guess I'm sexist.

Nice try. Strike one.
