Hi & Asslama,

Me and my fiancé have been together for almost two years. We were both college students when we knew each other, now he has a good job and we can file for a k-1 visa. Some details about us :

Me: female -Tunisian-muslim- 22 years old

Him : Male- American-Muslim- 26 years old

He stayed in Tunisia for 5 months and that is how it all happened.

My fiancé adopted an islamic life style even before knowing me but knowing the fact that he comes from a jew-christian parents, he didnt convert to islam until last year where he went to a mosque, said shahada and had been a muslim since (he prays, fasts, give zakat etc etc). However, when he converted, he didnt get any official document stating that he did.

We are planning to get married in the US (with a k-1) since it is the easiest way but we also want to have our islamic wedding after the civil contract. Basically what we want to do is get married in the US (civil contract) and have a religious wedding in Tunisia (at the mosque, imam, my parents, witnesses etc).

My questions are :

Do we need to provide proof that he is muslim during my interview?

How will my marriage be recognized in Tunisia ? is it automatically registered or should I register it myself providing my marriage contract and a paper showing that my fiancé now (later on husband) is a muslim?

How will I be contacted for the medical exam, interview etc ? will they send me a mail, an email or call me? Im a little bit frustrated if they'll send mail to my house since the post office guy ALWAYS throw the mail in our garden (without any notice) and my letters, packages had been destroyed many times (either by rain or stolen or become all dusty until we actually find them thrown in some corner outside my place!! TRUE STORY). Well, maybe because we dont have a letter box that he throws the letters in front of the door but I dont want to lose my k-1 packages. Should I explain that to the embassy so that they contact me by phone or just sit and pray that the package will arrive safe haha.

Sorry for the long thread. any advice would be much appreciated.

No

No your marriage will not be automatically registered anywhere except the US. If it is important to you to have it registered in your country, then you will need to do this yourself.

I believe they often send this information via email, but could be wrong here

Hopefully this answers some of your questions

Asslema Tun & welcome to VJ!

You don't have to prove he's Muslim in the interview but if you wish to have your marriage registered in Tunisia you will need to get that document stating he did covert.

We are currently awaiting to hear from the embassy regarding the next step in the k-1 process. They have stated to my fiance they will email him the forms although they have not done that yet, despite them having the petition for a month. My understanding is they are notoriously s-l-o-w (and proving themselves so).

Good luck on your journey!

Hey Thank you. we did not apply yet but we are kinda frustrated that it may take forever. How long did it take you so far?

We are planning to apply no later than end of March.

Good luck on your journey!

Hopefully this answers some of your questions

Thank you so much. your response is pretty helpful
