Hey everybody. Since my husband and I are expecting a little one in February and I'm not working we have to cut back on some of our monthly expenses and I thought I start with TV/Phone and Internet. Right now we have some Time Warner Package but we are paying almost 200 Dollars every months and 60 bucks alone are for the internet connection. I thought maybe we could split all that up and just stick with the Time Warner TV (cause it's just sooo convenient with the DVR button :P ) and maybe sign up with Lingo for the Phone and People PC for Internet. Has anyone of you made some experience (good or bad) with those two providers or are there cheaper options (I know about skype - I'm not using it - but we still need a regular home phone). Well, it would be great to I hear some of your opinions. Thank you very much. Evi

Eveline,

You are paying $60 for cable internet with TimeWarner? Should be $29.95 for up to 5 mbps, which is pretty darn fast.

Also, I dumped the digital phone service, because with two cell phones (one work, one personal), I thought the $50 I was paying was a waste. 3 months on, I realize that the TW digital phone was not needed after all.

You may also want to evaluate what premium channels you are paying for, perhaps there are channels that you are not using?

isn't Lingo VOIP? to use lingo you would have to have an always on internet connection like broadband. People PC is dial up so you would have to get a regular phone line from the telephone company.

YMMV

Check out Verizon Fios if it available in your area. Nice fibre optic connection to your house.

For a telephone service I use VOIP via Sunrocket and pay approx $16.58 per month (which includes fees & taxes) for unlimited calls anywhere in the US. Plus $3 worth of international calls are included per month..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

So I should try and call there first to see what we can do. I don't know why Internet is soo much but on every bill it states 59.99 Dollars and I think that is just waaay to much.

Wow they are really ripping you on the cable tv and internet. I have insight cable here. I get the basic cable + digital channels and cable internet for $90 total. I use Vonage for my home phone. It's $30/month total and that gives me unlimited LD and I think you can call the UK for free also.

I have had Vonage for several years now, and I have the $14.95 per month for 500 minutes. I talk to my Thai Wife in Thailand 3-4 times a day, waiting for our K-1 to come through, and my bill is about $50 per month.

I found that the unlimited was not necessary, as I never talk more than 500 minutes per month.

cut back to basic cable

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

On the Vonage Premium Unlimited Plan, you can call anywhere within the U.S, Canada, Puerto Rico, and...France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, and the UK for "free". I put free within quotes because calling any of those countries or anywhere within the U.S. is covered under the cost of $24.99 per month with Vonage.

The downside to Vonage (and any VoIP service) is that you need a really good broadband connection, because if you don't have that, the call quality will be terrible. So make sure you have that before getting this service...if you do get it, that is. ;)

I bought Luz a Vonage also. She has a DSL that is just barely above dial-up. 256K down and 128K up. It works fine. As long as she isn't online and downloading something at the same time. The great part is she has a local American number and she can call me (or anyone else in the US) and I can call her from any phone and it's free!!

We use Sonic.net for our DSL, for LD we use 3u.net (definately the cheapest to Morocco), and for TV we have a "free" solution. ;) Spend about $60/month for the whole thing.

Right now we pay about $60 for Internet and TV through Comcast (Time Warner) That is going to go up to $90 in about 5 months... but we just have basic cable....

and we pay about $25 a month for Vonage..... when you first sign up you get the first month free too.. of course you pay the normal activation fees though....

you do need a good internet connection....

like people have mentioned, that $25 a month lets you call anywhere in Canada and the US with no extra charges... and you can call the other countries someone else mentioned too....

Also you get all the cool features, like call display, call-waiting, voice messaging, Call Forwarding etc... at no extra charge..

geez, I sound like a commercial
