Tax question related to I-864... Was thinking of taking tax filing extension for 2012 taxes

Hi VJ community,

I am in the process for I-130 and waiting on NOA2. I started preparing my documents for NVC and in particular I-864 (AOS). I noticed a line related to IRS tax transcript in the instructions saying - "If you were required to file a Federal income tax return during any of the previous three tax years but did not do so, you must file any and all late returns with IRS and attach an IRS-generated tax return transcript documenting your late filing before submitting the I-864 Affidavit of Support."

Now, for some reason, I was thinking of filing taxes for 2012 later this year (in October) by taking an extension. My question is - Can I not submit my I-864 before October (which is when I want to file my taxes) ?? What does "IRS-generated tax return transcript" mean in the above?

The tax transcript is a summary of your tax return all on one page (I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong). Transcripts are only available for taxes that have been filed. You can order transcripts here http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Order-a-Transcript

I'm sorry I can't answer your other question.

CITIZENSHIP: 

Biometrics appointment for 2020-03-27 has been cancelled until further notice as all field offices are closed because of COVID-19.

***NOA dated 12/10/2020 USCIS stated they are able to reuse previous Biometrics***

Interview was easy. My hubby's Oath Ceremony is scheduled for February 25th. I can't watch >sad< but happy he is getting his certificate!

You can definitely file an extension for the year 2012. I filed for extension for tax year 2008 and I only sent copy of tax extension to NVC in sponsorship package in 2009.
