Just thought I'd post an update. Thanks to A&B's account, I decided to try for the Washington driver's license before I got AP/EAD.

http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/moving.html

I had all the required paperwork including an SSN. I brought along my marriage certificate to show my name change as being valid. I am from BC so we have some type of agreement with WA apparently and don't have to take a driver's test as a result. When I arrived the lady was super helpful. I was all prepared to be denied based on other people's experiences in WA and other states so when she asked questions like 'Are you a citizen?' I had to cringe saying 'not yet' and when she first put in my SSN she said 'hmm that's odd' and asked to see my card, I was mentally chewing my nails, but nothing came of it. Long story short, I got a temporary license for today and the real one is coming in the mail in a few days. And I don't have AP or EAD yet! So it is possible-yay!

My next battle is going to be with the Seattle Port of Service guy who told me I wasn't allowed to import my car from Canada until I had EAD. Which I am pretty sure is not true, especially since he first told me I'd need my greencard and then changed his answer. I don't think he knows what he is talking about. EAD is coming soon hopefully so I may just wait and not deal with that yet since I think I have up to a year to import my car under K1.

Thanks for your help A&B! And just the inspiration to go out there and try :)

Hey that is good news, glad that you were successful with the WA DOL! :star:

Good luck with the Port of Seattle….

YMMV, all states' licensing requirements are not created equal. Yeah, states rights!!!

Thanks for the good luck wishes A&B. However, Seattle port of service is a lost cause :( I wrote about my phone call today here:
