Hi there.

I am married to a US citizen, and live in the US (I am a UK citizen). We will have been married 6 years this June. I entered the US on a visa waiver 6 years ago this March. We have lots of proof that our marriage is strong and good.

Can you please tell me what I need to do to get residency of the US, the forms needed and the cost. I have been quoted $4300 by a Pittsburgh lawyer, which seems a lot of money.

The cost included a temporary green card.

That is a lot of money for him/her to fill out forms for you and tell you what documents you need to get together for him/her as they can not i.e birth cert., marriage license, etc. Nor can he/she guarantee that you get a temporary green card. All he/she can do is submit your paper work and USCIS/Embassy will make the decisions from there. Your case does not sound complicated and you should be able to do it yourself. But I will let the experts chime in and give you more precise advice.

Thank you, that's what I figured too. My wife is on a good salary, I have no criminal record, nor does my wife. We have a joint bank account, together with bank cards etc... I had heard that some lawyers are charging way too much money for simple processes.

Overstay is forgiven when marriage to a USC is cause for the adjustment of status/ greencard app, so you should be ok, just to NOT leave the USA until your greencard is in hand. Follow this guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/i130guide2

You won't need a lawyer, it's pretty easy. Just use the guides linked on the menu bar above to help you through the process, they should explain everything. Unless, that is, you've ever claimed to be a US citizen, which USCIS consider a very serious offence.

Good luck.

Just look at the guides at the top bar > go thru it > specific questions? > ask here

Your case seems straight forward. Don't waste your money with lawyers. They take your money, take all the details from you, fill in the forms, mail it out, receive the responses and forward to you. thats it. (Unless case have some issue, one doesn't need lawyer)

 Good luck !

Have you been working during the past 6 years? If so, did you fill out an I-9 when you were hired?

No I haven't worked in those 6 years.

I thought it was only $1490

I probably added it up wrong. I went through the list of forms needed with the fees. Am more than happy to be wrong.
