thank you everyone!!!

basically our solution looks like an amalgumation of a few suggestions.

we are renting from Penske in Buffalo... they give unlimited mileage, which U-Haul doesn't... we'll drive it back to TO, then on to our destination.

the price is actually $100 cheaper than U-Haul as well!!! i was really surprised, but apparently they have a deal going... (and for AAA members)

the company seems more reliable, the staff were incredibly helpful (especially compared to all the other people we had called... yes, we're talking to you, National!!!)

so yeah, that looks like our best option for cross-border... we'll let you know how it goes :)

I called several companies(UHAAUL, Budget, enterprise) and UHaul was the only one that did a one-way cross-border rental. If you're going from Toronto, you might want to see about doing a one way with someone, say Budget. Rent from Buffalo, or the closest crossing drive to Toronto and then drop it off in your new town. I'm going to be looking into this over the next few weeks myself.

I am from Buffalo (that's how me and my baby met!) I live in Atlanta, GA now. We have researched various options and U-haul has been the cheapest. I was going to rent budget in Buffalo and drive to Hamilton to pick up my love. It was cheaper to rent a U-haul in Hamilton and drive to Atlanta, GA. Please say a prayer! His interview is on Monday!!!!! I can't wait to see him on Tuesday. I am on vacation for the holiday and we are moving his things to Atlanta, GA

Personally I'm using U-Pack.

I pack the stuff, they haul it.

A Uhaul from where I am to where I'm going is running at $1500 right now, not including the likely $300+ of gas required for it, or taxes.

Upack Is costing me $1100, gas and tax included. With my flight tossed in there it's a little less than Uhaul, and I don't have the hassle of driving for probably 11 hours two days in a row in the middle of winter :D

Plus, I've heard too many stories about Uhaul.. nearly half the people I talked to who have used one said they showed up to pick up their truck, and the guy told them it wouldn't be in til next week.

Or the truck breaks down.

Or flips over (And Uhaul sues you for the cost of the busted trailer)

Etc.

Yes U haul has some negative feedback, but some of it is not their fault. They can't help it if someone decides to keep the truck longer than scheduled, and that is what happens a lot of the time. One of their biggest beefs is the upkeep of their flett, which seems to be subpar. If your in a big city, their should be many Uhaul dealers, I would look around and try to find a "trust worthy" uh aul dealer. I kept pestering my guy weekly!!! Truck was in good mechanical order, just was dirty inside, lol U-pack seems likea good alternative. I love to drive, thus went with Uhaul

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

UHaul may say that they guarantee something but they don't. They only two people I know that used them, reserved a truck and there was nothing on the day they needed it and then THEY were told to drive to other locations and when they got to the other locations there was nothing. I firmly believe they overbook like the airlines. Plus having the tire blow because of dangerously low tire pressure in all the tires was enough proof for me after seeing the W-5 report on t.v. Use ANYONE else....pay more

U-Haul is the only self move company that rents truck, one-way from Canada to the US. Additionally it was way less expensive than any of the other options. THat may have been a factor of both places being in relative large suburbs. Its either that or a service like PODS or a mover. Our move is the 13th (yea November...Yay!!!!!) and we had to go with U-Haul. Hopefully the truck will survive the nine and a half hour drive to Virginia.
