U-haul, do i have to?

ok... now that we have our visa, we have our move date... now we just need to get our stuff there...

we have heard a number of evil reports about U-Haul and the upkeep of their trucks and what-not... so we are trying desperately to find an alternative.

it's like a word-problem from school... we need to get our bodies and our stuff from toronto to new jersey the cheaply yet reliably... we are not importing a car, so we probably need to go with our stuff, so we can't use a u-pack or POD or an expensive moving company.

but we don't want to use U-haul... anybody know of an alternative? please?!

I have had good luck with Penske and I believe they are in both the US and Canada

Have you considered calling a MOVER? sometimes, you may actually get better rate than border-crossing with self-rental.

I called around and U-Haul does seem to be the way to go. But for me it is because I have no where to store a cube from U-pack. Try them out see if you can get a good price from them, and I feel your pain cause I have reserved a truck with UHaul, best of luck to l of us that have to use Uhaul.

I didn't want to do the whole u-haul thing but a quote of $260.00 one way from Hamilton to Cleveland was a no-brainer .. I called Penske as they have really nice trucks both sides of the boarder ... unfortunately they don't intermingle .. no boarder crossing from the location in my area.

a cube would have cost $1500 .. oh dear ...

What about Ryder? Don't know if they 'intermingle' between Canada and US, but they also have the same type of trucks as U-Haul...and always seem to be in better shape. Well anytime I've seen them on the highway anyway.

Might be interesting to look in to.

I called about 15 places and one 2 places did one way, and Uhaul is half the price easily, they told me to rent from Uhaul as it is much cheaper than them.

I rented with U haul. Al went well, truck weas in good mechanical shape, just the inside of it was dirty. I had to clean it prior to loading it up!!

My only beef with Uhaul, and probably becuase I was in a small town, was that they could not gaurentee me a truck until a week prior. I didnt book it online, I went to the local Uhaul place (which was a gas stn) Same price as online. Not many U-drive rental companies allow cross border transportation. and Not al U-haul trucks can do it either, so phone well in advance. When it comes to local moves, Uhail is last on my cal list. Usually go with Penske, trucks are new/clean, a bit more $$$ but less of a hassle. Best of luck

U-Haul is the only rental that allows cross-border one way. All the others you'd have to return to where you rented it from, if they let you across the border with it at all.

I also didn't want to rent a U-Haul truck to move my stuff because of the nightmare stories I heard. Instead, we are going to use my fiance's pick up truck and haul a U-haul trailer (12ft) cause he has a hitch. That way we are sure that nothing mechanical can happen.

Hmm...there seems to be a some mentions of "mechanical issues" and the U-Haul trucks being "less-than-clean." Is this the norm? I'll be hauling some stuff up to Canada (not for a long time yet though), and when I do, I might need to use a company like this, since I don't have a truck and there's no way my car could fit everything I need into it.

i moved with uhaul several times, in town, and once long distance from northern to southern ontario, never had a problem with anything,

when i moved here, i used uhaul also, but was a trailer not a truck, I sold most of my stuff, we didnt need 2 of. No problems here and the price was right.

When I moved my son here, we didnt need a uhaul, I rended a large SUV from AVIS and it was perfect, a mini van would have been better but they had none on the lot

I called several companies(UHAAUL, Budget, enterprise) and UHaul was the only one that did a one-way cross-border rental. If you're going from Toronto, you might want to see about doing a one way with someone, say Budget. Rent from Buffalo, or the closest crossing drive to Toronto and then drop it off in your new town. I'm going to be looking into this over the next few weeks myself.
