Hi! I have asked this question before but I did not get enough answer. I'm a permanent resident in Canada (not a citizen). I did not work for the whole year 2005 in Canada. Actually, I haven't worked there since 2003. I only received child tax benefit and GST last year. I tried doing my tax return online but when I reached the page for the summary of my tax return, there was no amount stated in there since I have no income to declare and I did not claim any refund and GST. My T1 would look like a blank form with just my name, address and other personal information written on it. Am I really required to file tax even if I don't have any income to declare? Anyone can give me advice on what to do in my case? Is there any agency who can prepare Canadian tax return here in USA like H&R? How much would it cost?

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

You do have to file a leaving Canada return if just to show that you are emigrating and you are no longer subject to taxation in Canada and are not eligible for GST or Child Care Credits. If it's all 0's.. it's all 0's.

You should file that last Canadian return and show on it the date you left Canada. As for a company to file it through...I would call around and check to see locally what office may be capable. But if it is a zero return then I would download the forms from the CRA website and file it yourself. If there is no income to declare then you simply put in the zeros at line 150, through. Be sure to make it clear you do not wish to be considered for GST and CTB applications or that may cause you grief later if you receive something....cash it and then they want it back.

Good luck!!!
