Hey, I am almost one and a half months old in the US. I came with a K-1 visa and am now married. Two weeks ago, I applied for SSN using my husband's name as my last name and was told that I might not get my SSN because am yet to file for AOS and the USCIS does not recognize the new name. We left a copy of our marriage certificate. Is it true that I might not get the SSN till after filing for AOS? Thanks in advance.

I got my SSN after I got married. I just showed my passport with the K1 Visa and didn't even brought a copy of our marriage certificate. Unless they have another "memo."

Hi Egarcia, by the time you applied for the SSN, had you applied for AOS?

Thread has been moved from general AOS forum to Social Security forum as a more appropriate location for this discussion

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

this varies by SSA office, unfortunately.

Is best to get it in VISA name, then change it later.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
