Hi All,

Completed my N 400 journey, and received my passport. I was wondering if there is anything else I need to do?

Nope. You've come to the end of the road. Have u updated your status with social security admin? Besides that, you don't have to do anything else besides go on vacation with your new passport

I haven't updated my status with Social Security as yet. Do I just call them, or would I be required to go in?

And yes...vacation already booked :)

Unfortunately you will have to go there with your passport or certificate. They will need the original to make a copy of and give it right back. You will recieve a new social security card (same number) in about a week without the stamped notation preventing employment. It's also a good idea to have it updated for social security benefits in the future.

Most important reason for becoming a US citizen is the right to vote, voters registration. Depending upon your state with a drivers' license, may want to change your status from an LPR to a US citizen.

With SS, do have the option to mail your passport or certificate in, but being paranoid about never seeing those again, prefer to walk in.

First thing my wife wanted to do was to show her certificate to her employers legal department. They really made a big deal about that one year extension notice that she had clear up to her certificate. Can't blame them, could be fined by the state $16,300.00. Don't know where they came up with that number, for employing an undocumented person. Once they saw that certificate, her file was closed.

So, do you have to maintain your home countries passport?

Hello,

I'm in NY. I checked my Drivers License, and don't see anything regarding LPR. So i guess that doesn't apply to me.

In regards to the SS, i have to walk in with my ID, Passport/Certificate, and From SS 5.

I don't know if I have to retain my country passport, but since I recently renewed it (about a year ago), there is no need to discard of it.

I have been naturalized for 7 years. I never did anything with Social Security after I became a citizen. Is that a problem?

hi,

It is important for you to update your US citizenship with Social Security office as soon as possible. 'coz certain benefits such as Disability benefits will only confer to US citizens.

You should do that immediately after your naturalization. All the best!

SS does keep track of your immigration status, is my understanding after my stepdaughter's oath ceremony the USCIS is going to contact the SS and give them that information, and that office manager said to hold off on applying for a US passport for a week because the DOS is also suppose to check with the SS on your immigration status.

SS refused to do this under Bush, but would do it for Obama after he gave them an extra 100 million bucks. But my stepdaughter still had to submit her naturalization certificate to get her US passport, so I am gathering the DOS does not trust either the USCIS or the SS.

We did this three times, from the EAD to the LPR, and from the LPR to the US citizen. Since I have their SS-5 on my computer already all filled out, only had to change their immigration status and the date, nothing else was changed. First I brought in their EAD cards, then green cards, then the CON on my way to work. Took all but two minutes, made a copy of each, got the originals back, and was on my way.
