Look at the conflict in Mindanao. These are the people and tactics Malaysia is now dealing with. Make peace with them, and part of them will splinter off and renew the conflict. The armed MNLF splintered off to create the armed MILF after peace was made. MILF is almost at peace and it already has a new armed splinter group, I forget their name though. MNLF, MILF fighters and other terrorist groups have long jumped over to Sabah to hide when things got tough on them in the Philippines. Even if Malaysia boots them now, they'll be back and probably with more support from the MILF and other groups in Mindanao and the Sulu islands.

Thanks for the history lesson, although I think they need to change their name, when I was reading this aloud to my wife and said MILF out loud she just rolled her eyes at me. :bonk:

When I was in Japan, my boss would always go to Mindanao for military ops. I didn't know why since it was need to know basis. But now the pieces are coming together.

The MILF name has always made me smile to. The acronym stands for Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The new faction is the BIFM (Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement) and the BIFF (Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters). All these groups have called for separate country in the Philippines, including the Sulu Islands and all of Mindanao. Then they settle for an autonomous region, and more land. Plus of course more money, perks and dominion for the leaders. Those that get it are happy, those that get too little say hey lets do it again. Heck the last president tried to make peace by giving away areas that are predominately Christian and put them under the autonomous rule of the MILF. They've even had referendums where regions were allowed to vote to join the autonomous Muslim area. Even predominately Muslim areas have voted down joining, because they know life just gets worse under the war lords.

It's always about money in the end isn't it :bonk: Glad I learned something today. My wife is trying to bring me up to speed.

My in-laws are giving us the play by play. They need to surrender before any more lives are lost. If that land truly belongs to them, there is a legal way to do it without killing people.

Most people aren't that patient to go the legal route which can take decades.

I get that, but doing it this way wasn't going to gain any ground as well.

The Bangsamoro have been trying to recreate a nation in that part of the world by force for over 500 years. A legal route could hardly be much different. I wonder if this is coming to a head now because the Bangsamoro are basically at peace and will have all this territory to run in the Philippines. So with all these soldiers that know how to do nothing but shoot a gun, they need to point them in a new direction.

The territory soon under Bangsamoro administration. That island of Tawi Tawi on the eastern end is an hour boat ride from Sabah.
