I requested for an SSN number when I applied for my US visa on October 2012. Got my green card in the mail on December 2012. But up to now, I still haven't gotten my SSN. My husband and I checked DS-230 again to see if there was a question that we missed. We are 100% sure that we answered yes to question 43a, but not sure if answered yes to question 43b. Do you think that's the reason why I haven't gotten mine yet? I don't want to apply for ssn at the social security office in person since I don't wanna risk having 2 ssn's.

Even if you check the box for a social security number to be issued, it's often a coin toss as to whether you will actually receive it.

Visit your local social security office with a completed SS-5 (application for a social security card), your birth certificate and green card and you should get a card in the mail a week or two later.

The same thing happened to my husband. We went into the social security office and they had already issued one right after he got here. We never received it.

The lady just sent out a request to re-issue and we had it three days later!

There is the possibility that the letter carrier did not reckonize the name as living at that address and sent the SSC back. A trip to the post office to see if your name has been added so mail will be delivered. I know that their website says all properly addressed mail will be delived, but that is a load of horse dung. M wife's SSC was sent back as was a International Women's Day Card I sent her with my ofice's address as the return address. That is when I discovered the USPS' policy. This is especially a probelm with apartments but does happen with houses too.

After visiting the postoffce go visit the nearest SSA office and request another SSC. You could have it mailed to their office if you don't mind another trip to pick it up--that is what we did. We did get a print out of her number so we had that.

Good luck,

Dave
