I am a big fan of Wal*Marts right to practice free enterprise. Now do I prefer to shop there.. No. Simply because it's to big to go in a grab just one or two items. The items are usually, of lower quality, and they have 20 checkout lanes with 2 open which always makes me ill.

Is the brand name booze and beer they sell there for 20% less than the supermarket of lower quality? I buy my Glidden paint there - lower price and better quality than the Behr Premium at Home Depot.

Yes, it is their right to practice free enterprise. I don't think that people, especially in small towns, realize they are shooting themselves in the foot by shopping there. My personal opinion is this country is screwed economically. Walmart is just a small example of why.

Retail is retail. I bet, on average, Walmart employees get a better deal there, than the employees working at the mom and pop stores. First off, if you have few employees, you are exempt from many employer mandates. Small business people, like myself, are total tightwads.

My guess is that Walmart is a corporate tightwad on an unimaginable scale.

I worked Saturday and several 10 hour days because of wal*mart and Sams and their demand for our product. They sustain over 100 jobs here. we all buy stuff in the local community .

Don't be mad because Wal*Mart figured out how to do it more effectively and cheaper than anybody else. Sam Walton started out Mom and Pop also, he was jsut better at what he did. What do you suggest we ban Wal*mart because they are successful.

If you don't like Wal*mart don't shop there. If you don't want to work for them, work somewhere else. Surely if they are so bad to work for , there is someone else competing for a good worker, that will pay better.

Ahhh but see.. No one is forced to deal with Wal*Mart. I ma forced to pay taxes . Just a wee bit of difference.

your job and the company you work for, are hardly an accurate or whole sample of vendors walmart sources..

i am not mad because walmart swindled rural america and got richer than rich. i'm mad at 'mericans who don't take note of the numbers of walmart employee's who are on government assistance and prefer to blame the worker instead of the employer's lack of paying a living wage.

there are three supercenter walmarts in my town, for quite a few people - shopping at the more expensive 'martins' or 'food lion' is not an option. i've stayed away from walmart for years, but in the past year, i've broken down and bought groceries there in order to make ends meet. i hate it but even with us making what the us considers to be the very low end of middle class - i've had to break down and charge groceries a couple times. charging groceries. at walmart. pretty depressing. viva la china!

Did you know that wal*mart/Sams is the world leader in making manufactures that do business with them implement environmentally sustainable processes. Did you know that Wal*Mart audits it's manufactures to ensure they are following safety and health standards.

what?

are you bent over as you're typing this? jeez..

We ARE forced to deal with Walmart even if we have no desire to. Most local retailers just can't compete with them so business suffers. I'm glad there's a trend growing to buy local but we have two Super Walmarts in our town and the grocery store that I work for can't compete.

When did "I can't compete" become a valid thing to whine about?

That's like me whining about not having a job because other people do a better job of keeping their skills current. No one would feel sorry for me if I said "I can't compete"! They'd simply point out that I'm an unintelligent lardass.

well then your grocery store needs to re-brand, re-think or find a way to compete. What would you like us to do. Make Wal*mart charge the same price becuse others can not compete. Go to your Local Social Security office, or most any other government enity that does not have to compete. Apathy, poor service and massive overhead.

Heck deal with your local cable outfit that has a monopoly. Same thing.

Here I thought you were going to suggest they be forced to provide free health insurance. In California, they were caught telling workers how to apply for gov benefits! I guess if you have the government pay your workers benefits, then its easier to have low prices.

    I'm a libertarian and a capitalist and my problem with Walmart is that the government is practically subsidizing most of their workforce. Without government assistance with childcare, food, medical expenses, and potentially even TANF, most of these workers could not even afford to work at Walmart. That isn't the free economy...it is a corporation working hand in hand with entitlement programs to bleed the country dry.

Laugh. I never even thought of that angle.

Which in turn, would continue to keep the low wage earners under the thumb of the rich. No thanks.

Illegal aliens make even lower wages and have no benefits at all. How do you feel about economically punishing the employers/exploiters of illegals with taxes so high they would never dare to exploit a human for profit?.

In case you were expecting Obama to help the downtrodden Walmart employees...

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/03/03/obama-walmart-exec-budget-chief/1960923/

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Obama on Monday will nominate Walmart's Sylvia Mathews Burwell as his next budget director, a senior administration official said.

If confirmed by the Senate, Burwell would take the helm at the Office of Management and Budget at a time of heated budget battles between the White House and congressional Republicans. She would also bring more diversity to Obama's second-term Cabinet following criticism that many top jobs were going to white men.

The president will announce Burwell's nomination during a White House ceremony Monday morning, said the official, who requested anonymity in order to confirm the nomination ahead of Obama.

Burwell is a Washington veteran, having served as OMB's deputy director in the Clinton administration and chief of staff to former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin. Burwell currently runs the Walmart Foundation, the retail giant's philanthropic wing, and previously served as president of the Gates Foundation's Global Development Program.

The official credited Burwell with being a principal architect of a series of budget plans in the 1990s that led to a budget surplus.

Burwell's nomination signals that the White House is trying to get back to normal business after the president and Congress failed to avert $85 billion in automatic spending cuts that took effect Friday. While the president has warned of dire consequences for the economy as a result of the cuts, the White House does not want to the standoff with Congress to keep the president from focusing on other second-term priorities, including filling out his Cabinet and pursuing stricter gun laws and an overhaul of the nation's immigration system.

Obama made quick work of filling key national security openings in his administration, but has been slower to fill other Cabinet openings, including the OMB post. Vacancies also remain at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Commerce and Energy Departments, and the U.S. trade representative.

Burwell would replace acting OMB director Jeffrey Zients, a well-liked figure in the Obama administration, who has been discussed as a contender for other top jobs.

And Walmart because of it's size now sets the standard for "competitive" compensation in the retail sector, it's ever more of the retailers relying on the government to feed their employees and take care of their health- and child care. That's the high cost of low prices. Corporate welfare. Hell yeah. Murica!
