I don't see why science or religion have to preclude one another.

I remember being blown away in College Astronomy and Physics...the patterns to everything in the Universe are amazing....

For me it's easier to beleive that a higher power masterminded our Universe than that it was just some random occurence.

The Old Testament is obviously not accurate, we can prove that scienitifically...but if we expand our thinking past the old man with the white beard.....I feel it's totally possible that our universe is the result of a higher power.....it's actually MORE believable to me than anything else.

why can't physics be the explanation of how God did it????

Not the boundaries drawn on maps,

With the names of powerful men.

That's all I've wanted -

To walk in such a place with you,

On an earth without maps."

What's all this about being "tolerant" ? Do you see anyone who is non-religious trying to take away someone's right to religion? Saying they feel religion is "stupid" or "naive" or whatever because someone else told them to think that?

I am not tolerant of cultures that approve of wife-beating. I am not tolerant of cultures that condone animal abuse. I am not tolerant of people justifying their hatred with a book someone else wrote and calling that "enough proof it's evil."

I am only tolerant of these things to the extent that I have not yet had a chance to play a part in stopping them.

And why would the entire group of non-religious people be expected to be especially tolerant? Lisa, where's the logic here?

I respect people's right to be religious. I respect spirituality and the need to feel connected to things. I don't share in that--I am completely content accepting that I'm too small to understand why we're here and that I don't need to know why--but I understand why some people might.

Do I think some people's beliefs are downright stupid? Hate to tell you this, but yes, I do, but that doesn't mean I don't "tolerate" them practicing them (within reason).

Do I tolerate them using that to impose their beliefs on me or anyone else? NO.

Clearly - there's no reason it shouldn't. Except that for a small minority of people who interpret the bible literally - millions of years and theoretical physics (where there is no direct physical proof) is hard to stomach. Not to mention all that crazy creationism vs. evolution stuff

When evolution first was postulated as a theory, the Pope at the time marvelled at how it seemed to be a viable scientific story of the book of Genesis.

Even St. Augustine, who lived about 1500 years ago, realized that the Bible could not be read literally.

Why science & religion are retreading this ground, I don't know, except that it makes good political hay. Red meat to base, base vote, roar.

if we believers are wrong, we will never know we were wrong. If you non-believers are wrong, you will certainly know it for all eternity.

Gotta do better than read Pascal's cliff notes, punkin. Even Pascal didn't think his 'wager' worked. (Really!)

I didn't ask for tolerance, I asked for respect & refraining from belittling people....if that's too much to ask, or illogical, well there's nothing else to say!

I thought Muslims didn't eat pork because it is a dirty animal. Nothing to do with religion....
Jews too. Because pigs use their own waste to stay cool in a dry climate above a certain temperature. So Jews and Muslims created a taboo against pork.

There are many Orthodox Christians out there that don't believe in the consumption of pork either. The Ethiopian Orthodox church, for example, is fairly clear on this taboo. Which is cool. More chops for me.
