No SSN in mail yet. Cause for concern, or being impatient??

My wife received her green card early this month, and on the 15th of February we went to the local SSN office to apply for her social security number. We had all documents needed, though the agent didn't look at my wife's green card. She only looked at her Employment Authorization Card, birth certificate, and her passport, which was all scanned to be sent out for verification. She said it should take less than two weeks, but as of today we have yet to see a SSN.

I'm just wondering if it is too early to be concerned? The reason I am a little edgy about this is because the agent was pretty confident that it would only take 7 to 10 days, as long as everything was verified by USCIS/DHS.

What could possibly be the problem? Would it be imprudent to call the local office and ask if there are any problems with my wife's case? I would rather know sooner than later so we can get things straightened out. Or should I just wait another two weeks and see if we get it by then?

We have already missed out on last year's earned income credit for our tax return due to her not having an SSN.. I would hate to miss out on another year of it.

Any clarity would be appreciated!

I can understand your concern. The two weeks seem like forever.

If I were you, I would call or visit your SSA office. It certainly doesn't hurt to follow up on an SSN application.

More often than not, the SSA employee can issue you a document showing your assigned social security number. With this document, you can use this as proof when applying for a driver's license.

At least you would have her SSN number while you wait for the actual card. You may then complete the tax return.

Hope this helps you some! Good luck!

It took my wife eight weeks to get her social security card. Now that she has already applied, you just have to wait. File an extension on your tax return if you don't get it by April 15th. good luck.

You could always go back and amend your tax return once you get her SS number
