Complicated Address Situation

Hi everyone!

I hope this post does not confuse you!

I got my GC last June 2011 and back then we were still living with my in-laws. A couple months later we moved to our own place and I did the change of address with USCIS and I received confirmation of it. However, last week the notice to remove conditions was still mailed to my in-laws and not to our new place. When I file for ROC will it matter? Do I just apply with my current address and will they send it there?

Now here's where it gets complicated.

I will only be staying at my current place until May because I am only here for school. I graduate May so I am temporarily staying with my in-laws until my husband arrives from deployment. In August when he is back we are moving again to another place. How will two change of address during ROC affect my application, like will it mess it up? I worry that my GC will get sent to the wrong place or that the post office will return it to sender.

I hope someone can enlighten me and give me the right advice!! Thank you!

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

I would update USCIS with your in-laws address. You're planning on sending in your ROC in March. It may take 6-7 months for the ROC to complete.

I don't believe multiple changes to your address will affect your application. However, notices, appointment letters and possible RFEs (God forbid!) may not reach you.

So I would definitely use your in-laws address. At least till you get your 10-year green card or until your husband comes back...whichever comes first.

Just my opinion. Good luck!

Ok, are you close to your in laws now where you are? Because think about it, when you file your ROC, the address they put on there will be where they send the NOA1 then the biometrics appointment letter. If you are living in another town or state, would you beable to travel where your in laws are at to do the biometrics at that USCIS office?

Usually when you do apply for ROC, you will get the NOA in what, one or two weeks, then you can get the biometric letter anywhere from 2 weeks to a month after that. Try to figure out where you will be in the first first 2 months of application then go from there.

They always send the ROC reminders to the old addresses - they never check the updates for those, so don't use that to judge what you should do. For real cases, they check (the reminder is just a courtesy). Send in your ROC with all your current information and update as things change. I wouldn't try to game the system and make things complicated.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Ahh that's a relief! Thank you!! I was just worried about why they sent the notice to my inlaws when I already updated my address two years ago. I will just apply with my current address and update as things change, like you said. Thanks Harpa! As always! :)

No problem and good luck with the baby! I think for current cases they want you to update two ways, like online as well as over the phone (I don't remember exactly which), but the notices they give you have the instructions.

Is the place you're living at right now, and the place you're moving to in the same town? Or near the same town? If so, I'd get a PO Box and do that as my mailing address, but update the physical address when you move. That way you'll always get your mail.

Can I get a PO Box thats just for USCIS? I thought they did not send greencards and stuff like that in a PO Box? Its about an hour away but I don't mind opening one and driving if it means it will get there and give me peace of mind

If you want to, sure! We don't get street delivery so ALL of our mail (well except sometimes packages but even then sometimes they take them to the local post office) comes to the PO Box. You'll see on the ROC form it even has a special spot for "mailing address" as opposed to physical address. I never had any issues with mail delivery.

Hey!

So I just wanted to confirm that I can open a PO Box and my GC and all other USCIS documents can be mailed there? I didn't know that green cards can be sent to a PO Box!

And this wont affect it even if I do a change of address of my current address to next because the post office will still deliver to the PO box right? Coz Im not doing a change of address for my PO Box, just my current address so mail will still be delivered. I hope I'm making sense. :)

I understand what you're saying. Your residential address will change, but not your mailing address.

Yes you can open a PO Box and all your documents and GC will be mailed there. That's not a problem.

When you open a PO Box your mail should be addressed to your PO Box but if it's not, all your mail should still be received at the PO Box when you do a change of address. You can also do an address forward with USPS from street to PO Box to make doubly sure (which is what my husband and I do).

I had a quick look at the AR-11 and it wants street address and doesn't mention mailing, so technically you need to update your street address on the AR-11 (and your husband his I-865) but your mailing SHOULD still be the PO Box and your mail SHOULD still be put in your PO Box even if it's not on your mail because that's now your mailing address with USPS.

Hope that makes sense!
