Hi Saylin, I had my wife sign the forms then scan and send them to me, are you saying that is not acceptable for NVC and I should have the original signed copies?

Thank you!

That unfortunately won't work. You can try, but you'll likely get a checklist as the forms need to be the original ones. No scans or photocopies allowed.

I have another question on Form I-864 EZ

On Question 19 it has two checkboxes under Federal Income Tax Information

First checkbox says

I have filed a Federal Tax return for each of the recent three years. I have attached a photocopy only for the recent tax year. After that there is a section for each year along with the total income

Second checkbox says

Optional I have attached tax transcripts for the my second and third years.

My question is, do I need to check both boxes or just the second box because I am attaching last 3 years of tax transcripts.

If I were to check the first box, what do I provide in the My total income section? The tax transcript I have is broken down into Income from Wages and Interest Income, do I add them together or do I then go into my actual tax return (but then the figure in the tax transcript will be different from the figure in the form)??

The form is below for your reference

If you're providing three years worth of tax information, then check both boxes and fill out the question. That's what I told my husband to do on his form when we submitted 3 years' worth. I'll admit though, the way they word the two boxes needs to be changed as it can be confusing.

As for what amount to put, read the question again. It specifically tells you what line to use based on which tax return form (1040 or 1040EZ) you filed. You can find the line on your transcript, no need to go back to the return.

Oh, nice, didn't know TaxAct automatically did that! I'll have to recommend that program then with those that have spouses abroad.

And although you can't eFile, at least you can do it through one of the tax programs then merely print it out at the end to mail. Much easier than actually trying to do the paper form by yourself laughing.gif

oh, definitely! I just printed the forms and sent them in, easy peasy! It's also the only tax program I found that works for USC who are living overseas, most of the others didn't have the required forms or if they did they cost money. TaxAct is free for the current year. I didn't download either, just signed up on the website and did it all online.

USC married to Palestinian lived in Doha, Qatar for seven years, in the USA since July 2013 with an eight year old and a two year old smile.png

It IS way too quiet for me... If VJ is moving, I feel like at least something is moving and there is something to do.

It's so frustrating when VJ starts hibernating like that!

I checked both the boxes - it was a bit confusing - so thank you for clarifying. I also got the correct numbers from the tax transcript.

Last couple of questions on the I-864

  • On the instructions it says to ensure that all pages are stapled together in the correct order. So we staple everything together in one packet - or just the related documents (like pay stubs etc.)
  • In the instructions in Post 1 here, it says that one should write the case number on every single page? Is that advisable - meaning - writing the case number even on the bar code sheet, the I-864 form etc? Will that not be a problem as we are writing on a form where nothing is supposed to be on the top part?
  • For paystubs, I just decided to send the last 6 months (12 paychecks since we get paid twice a month), is that going to be enough? I have plenty of other pay stubs but not sure if I should add them.

I wouldn't recommend stapling any documents. Use paperclips. Much faster and easier for an officer to remove a paperclip than to remove a staple.

Yes, I recommend writing the case number on the top right of everything. There's only TWO documents where you don't write it: the bar-coded cover sheet and the cover letter. Everything else, yes. The purpose of writing a case number on each page is so that in case one page gets misplaced, it can easily be reunited to the case.

And depending, you might only need one recent paycheck. If it has a year to date (YTD) column, then you can just submit one. We submitted 6 months worth, but looking back, I would have just submitted the most recent one.

 kinda upset. i think it was not really a good idea to hire a lawyer. i told my husband about the requirements he can obtain while waiting for the case number but he refused to do so since he would listen to his lawyer and said just wait. just wait and just wait. tried to explain that we can save time and for the process not to be delayed but still he refused to listen. now this lawyer said she will just send the list of requirements when we already have the case number and we will know the case number on the invoice that will be sent to my husband. i'm really expecting for a 20-day delay. darn!

now i am just wondering, do we really have to wait for the invoice before we can pay the fees? even if we already have a case number and the rest of the numbers needed obtained through calling NVC? :bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

Does anybody know when taking a passport photo, do you have to show your ears as well? I have long hair, and I just got the photos I need to take with me to my medical and interview, and unfortunately my ears don't show, is this going to be a problem? on the guidelines it says nothing about showing your ears :bonk:

Once you have your case number and IIN, you can log onto the payment portal to see when bills have been invoiced. When they appear, you can pay them right away. Since you have a lawyer, both bills will be invoiced at the same time, so both should be available a few days after your case number is assigned.

Hmm, I tried looking at the photograph requirements and couldn't find anything about ears needing to be shown, so you should be okay. If you want, you can re-do them and print them out again, with your ears showing this time. But, I think you should be fine.
