why pay to send them elsewhere?

Because releasing them into the United States is basically a way of saying "you broke the law but you aren't being punished for it, see ya later". How is that fair? We're going to end up paying for the regardless of how we do it, so why not have them returned.

And I realize the word "returned" makes them sound like an item at a clothes shop, but I can't think of anything else atm. And I also realize that using "them" as a reference is totally not PC, but there's only so much I can do.

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

because it costs more to return them now than it does to release them and forget about it. that's what the cuts are about, eliminating immediate expense.

and i wasn't being overly pc - deportations occur to all sorts of countries. where people are being deported to - determines the cost.

Sure, I get that. It's still not right imo.

And here's where I'd be like "our entire immigration system needs a reform blah blah blah", but I have to go to the dmv.

The immigrants that are being released are low-risk, non-violent offenders. Supervised release costs pennies on the dollar compared to detaining them. As val says, the cuts are about eliminating immediate expense. This is a cost-effective way of managing the situation. When we are facing immediate and drastic cuts to education, health, transportation and other parts of the governmental economy, deporting everyone in ICE detention is a really cost-inefficient way of dealing with what is a real problem.

I think that we have all gone through the immigration process legally on here makes us particularly sensitive to this issue. But the issue at hand is that the sequester is causing all sorts of painful cuts here. Fairness is out the window.

Another ICE official reiterated that all of those released remain in deportation proceedings, released on an order of supervision.

Some of those released will be on intensive supervision, such as ankle monitors, while others will just have weekly check-ins with an ICE officer, the official said.

i want to see how many actually show up for that weekly check in
