Expressing an opinion is harmless.

I'm asking if that's what you think this teacher was doing?

Because "waved a Bible at his students, handed out religious pamphlets and espoused creationism in his evolution lessons" seems a little more than expressing an opinion to me.

Is dressing children up in animal costumes, so that the teacher can protest a road widening project expressing an opinion, or is that part of the approved curriculum?

What the hell are you talking about?

Simple hypothetical. You don't have to play if you don't want to.

I was hoping it was a true story. I wondered what part the animal costumes played in a road widening protest.

Is hippie tree hugging a normal class subject for elementary school these days? I have been out of school for so long, I really wouldn't know.

i don't think so. until tree hugging is included in the SOLs - teachers don't have time for it.

The teacher wasn't expressing anything. The teacher - per the article - was instructing students to refer to criminals as heroes.

I was referring to the Bible thumper, but that example would work as well. Obviously he was not teaching approved material.

I was hoping it was a true story. I wondered what part the animal costumes played in a road widening protest.

It was a true story, one I personally witnessed. Made the papers and everything.

exposing children to animal costumes at such a young age can be an indicator of adult onset cosplay. not something we should encourage. did you see that episode of "my strange addiction"?

no fair! you said hypothetical!

Did that story have something to do with roadkill?

We live in a largely unmanaged heavily wooded area. To do anything means cutting down trees, well, not really big trees, saplings and root sprouts that spontaneously appear everywhere. Think of them as big weeds. The county acquired some private land between a main route and the river that runs though the area, to create a county park, with a beach, picnic facilities, bike trails, and river access for boats. Wonderful project. However, since the entrance was on a curve, the Highway Patrol decided the road needed to be widened to make entering and leaving the park safe. That required the removal of about 20 of these small trees. Some teacher objected, and brought her students out in animal costumes to gather community support. So, everybody compromised, only six trees were removed, and you can only make a right turn, opposite the direction back to town, and widened a spot further down the road, where people were expected to make a bat turn to return to the direction from whence they came. For each of the six trees that were removed, ten trees were to be replanted.

Now it is a decade later. Everybody turns left, or goes straight when exiting the park, during the busy season there are frequent accidents at that intersection, and all sixty of the trees they planted died.
