I have a friend who was here on a H2B visa, which got converted to a green card. However he and his family are on welfare. He works part-time but only has health coverage thru the county families program and can’t afford to get better insurance.

Recently his sister in another state was able to get their mother a green card and into the country. About 3 months after arriving the mother was diagnosed with brain cancer. The daughter kicked (or is in the process of kicking her out and sending her to my friends place). He is more than happy to have her come, but we are concerned that she will not get the medical treatment she needs. I heard that people on green cards can not be covered by welfare, so if he can't even get his own family off of welfare will the new state allow his mother to get medical treatment? Currently (from what I understand) the sister has good insurance that is covering her mother, but she is dropping all of that. Is that legal? We are encouraging him to see an INS Lawyer, but would like to know where to get more info.
