Word has begun circulating that Gov. Chris Christie will announce in today’s budget speech that New Jersey will participate in the portion of the federal health-care reform law that expands Medicaid eligibility to more uninsured adults.

Advocates for the expansion are celebrating, as the move could give around 300,000 more low-income adults access to health insurance. It would shift some state health-care costs to the federal government and reduce charity care expenses; the federal government would pick up all the costs for those beneficiaries between 2014 and 2016, then 90 percent of the costs through 2022.

The Tea-party types will not be happy! The working poor getting health care! How awful!

This is an interesting turn of events. Chris Christie had previously made comments that led everyone to believe he would not be opting in. I believe the recent flood of GOP governors who have opted in has a lot to do with this. I wish Christie was more a profile in courage on this and not a damn follower but oh well.. at least he made the right call in the end.

Much of it has to do with the SCOTUS decision, that removed some mandates, and left others in place. In order to makes things equitable, between poor legally working people, and residents without any legal status getting free government healthcare, the states have to opt into the Federal program.

Despite that, most GOP governors have declined. Jan Brewer seems to have paved the way for GOP governors making the decision after.

I predict that they will all cave to pressure from hospitals and doctors as well as advocates for the working poor. He11, maybe some of them will even examine their conscience or read their bibles and decide that it is the morally correct thing to do! Stranger things have happened. On second thought, a politician with a conscience? Probably not.

Rick Scott opted in. He was as staunch an opponent as they come. As recently as late last year he had numbers cooked to pretend this expansion is a bad deal for Florida. Media called him out and he caved. But as you say, as long as do the right thing in the end. Plus, it's fun to see the Tea Baggers steaming.
