Hi! I've some issues with my wife driver's license. On January 3rd I took her to take her Driver's permit exam (she didn't know how to drive). She took her exam, passed, but they didn't give her a plastic driver license, only a piece of paper. She can drive with this temporal permit only for 60 days, and the expiration date is on March 3rd.

The problem is that 3 weeks ago she told me she was ready to take the practice driving test so she can get her full license and indeed she passed. We were thrilling. But when they called their number to get her id photo taken, a rude lady told her she cannot issued her driver license unless she gave her, my wife's DRIVERS PERMIT. My wife handled her, the permit driver's temporal paper and she said NO. She was heartbroken, she had a pending job offer but I cannot take her if she accepts. And public transportation is not an option, cause there's non. That's why a bought her a car.

This lady gave my wife a receipt and once her driver's permit arrive on mail, she just need to take this receipt and she will get her full license issue. But it's been almost 2 month and nothing. My wife still drive with me by her side, but while I'm not home she can't even go to the grocery store or the gym. She is really sad.

I recently call to the driver license line, and they weren't able to give me any information. Why is taking so long? what else I can do?

Have you gone to the DMV in person to check why the delay? If you can't get through the toll-free line, I would suggest you go with you wife in person and ask to speak to supervisor. Good luck!

Yeah I went and talked myself the same day that I took my wife to get her driving test, and one of the supervisor "tracked" my wife's permit and told me that her permit was at Des Moines. He explained me something about they needed to checked her immigrant status, that's why they didn't issue her driver's permit card in the 1st place. But also told to me to wait only a few days. It's being almost a month since that talk :bonk:

Time to go back and have another "talk" about how ridiculous they're being.

According to your timeline, a month ago your wife didn't have a greencard. I don't know your state requirements, but often a greencard is required to get a full license. That might be the holdup.

Go through this Iowa license online tool and read the bottom of each page as you go through it

You might figure out what you need to do.

I can tell you from experience that the Iowa DOT is useless a lot of the time. Don't know their ar*e from their elbow half the time.

You need to go in and ask to speak to a supervisor. Take her greencard and get her status updated.

She shouldn't be having an issue. I did the same as your wife and got the permit first (to get on insurance) and then I took the driving portion. In Iowa they issue the paper first (looks like a photocopy of your license) to carry over till your actual one arrived. They tell you if it hasn't arrived in 2 weeks to call the number on the back of the piece of paper.

You can get a license with an EAD or a GC in Iowa so because she has a GC you shouldn't be having issues. I would say someone hasn't done what they're supposed to be doing.

Whereabouts in Iowa are you?

I'm currently going through the same thing in iowa. I applied when i had barely gotten my EAD for a pending AOS application, its been over 21 days since i got my temporary license(paper) and between then and now i got my AOS approved and should be receiving my LPR card in the mail shortly. Earlier this week i called the iowa DOT to see what was going on with my permanent license and they gave me some story about the printer being down, but today i got a call from an investigator who had questions about my license and wants to meet with me, i have to bring everything i presented when i applied for my license which at the time was the EAD, SS card and pieces of mail. I'm wondering why they would require this investigator to meet with me if everything should check out? does the EAD get canceled once your approved for LPR? I kind of have the feeling it has to do with the fact that I'm Hispanic immigrant in a predominantly white area( yes, i know I'm playing the race card), what am i supposed to believe if i doubt anybody else has to go through this? can anybody elaborate on this, or has anyone had a similar experience with the Iowa DOT or any DOT for that matter? all i know is this sucks, i have a job interview on Monday and i was hoping to have my permanent license..but alas we don't always get what we want

Take everything you applied with (yes the EAD is void once your GC is approved) and also take your GC (or approval letter if you don't have the GC yet) and tell them your status has upgraded.

You haven't done anything wrong so you have nothing to worry about.
